OK, I am real new at this. 3 days ago I hatched 3 of 40 Chinese Painted Quail eggs which I later learned are commonly referred to as Button Quail. It does sound more exotic and that is what sold me on trying them.
None of the posts mention free ranging them, does that mean if they get out they will never come back home? Did I hatch something even harder to train than Guineas?

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY would NOT try to free range quail. Quail are very beautiful birds but just not to bright. Once you let them go they are usually gone for good. I don't know anything about Guineas but I personally would not bang my head against a wall trying to train a button quail to stay in the yard. Not saying that it can't be done but I think you would have more luck trying to train them to stand on their heads.

Good luck with your birds.

Just a side note: Quail are addicting!!! Welcome to the club!

Thanks for the welcome but I may not be in the club for long by the sounds of things. My only previous encounter with Quail people was a guy with Bob Whites that did have them trained to free range and come home at night. It seems Buttons are different.
About Guineas...My luck with them so far is that they either fly away never to be seen again or they will not leave the coop.
Maybe I should just stick with chickens.

They will "freerange" alright. You'll never see them again and you may potentially spread deacease among wild bird population wiping out thousands birds.

Ok first off button quail should not be outside birds unless you live in a very warm enviroment, second you will never see you buttons again if you let them loose they will be eaten or freeze to death very quickly.... Buttons are very different then other quails .. Personally I just cleared out my Button stcok they are cute but thats about it .. Let us know if you do figure a way I would love to watch them running around the yard but hihgly doubt its possible ...

I'v seen people keep buttons outside in draft free sheds around here. I'v never kept them, but I'v seen people keep large groups of them in draft free sheds, not sure if they were insulated or heated though. As for buttons running around the yard, that would be terrible, I'd always be stepping on them by accident... lol

I had my Coturnix free ranging the other day, although not on purpose! (The latch on their cage came off, and out they went!) I am still missing a white hen, didn't see it at all. I caught the first two with my net (wow, they can FLY!

) The last one took off in a seperate direction when I went to catch the male (they were together) and I couldn't find it again. It was waiting for me outside the garage when I went out to feed that evening, I guess it figured freedom was overrated!
