Is he Lavender???

Thread Starter

Hi Guys!  I'm new to the world of silkies and I hatched out a little boy(yes I KNOW he's a BOY b/c he's been acting like one for weeks now!) on Valentine's Day.  He is from Jen's sassysilkie.com(MUST give her all the credit!) and after talking this over with her she said that it is "possible" for him to be a lavender b/c she did have a lavender hen in her breeding program at one point.  Anyway, he is definitely looking different than my other splash baby.  His feathers are NOT white...in plain terms I would describe his feathers as "silver" or a "light blue"...when I look at him it looks as if he glows!??  Not sure if that makes sense.  I checked the base of his feathers and they are blue.  My other splash baby has a white base(folicle?not sure what it's called to be exact)...just saying where the feather comes out on him is blue.  He has no distinct spots anywhere.  Anyway, it's hard to capture in a picture b/c of the lighting but these pics are my best attempt.(I tried to put him next to my blue baby & splash baby so you could compare)  Let me know your thoughts.  Thanks, Keri

possibility, but could be a splash. I have had splash that looked like that. I do have lav birds(not silkies). Unfortunately it may be a waiting game to be 100% positive IMO. After he gets fully feathered if there are any darker areas then he is a splash, a lavender will be completely one color cuz there is no lavender splash.....

He does look lav - but it's awfully hard to tell - especially with silkie feathers!  He could be a splash, or even a very LIGHT blue.  To really know, you'll have to wait for him to grow up - and then cross him and see what the chicks turn out like!

Such a shame, really - think of all the cute silkie babies you'll just HAVE to have!  smile
