Hen bleeding from vent? rectum? URGENT

This AM when I opened the coop, Marigold had a small amount of clear liquid on her behind. Only noticed because one hen was pecking at her behind. Thought maybe she'd just layed an egg off the perch (a problem I'm trying to find the culprit on) -- but no egg anywhere.

4 hours later I go out to let them free range and she has blood dripping down her behind - ACK! Not sure what it could be, or what to do. Haven't gotten any closer look yet since I don't know what to look for and I"m sure she's not going to be really happy with me poking around.

SO-- what am I looking for? And can this be fixed or will I have to put her down?

The only thing I can think of that has changed is there is oyster shell available at all times. They have always gone crazy eating it up when I'd give them a pile of crushed egg shells -- maybe she ate too much shell now that it's available freely??

I'd isolate her, to protect her, until someone more knowledgeable posts- can you tell if she is cut or from the hens pecking at her?
 
It doesn't look like a cut or from pecking -- it looks like a period, but hens don't do that. The only thing I notice as she is with the others, is she looks a little bigger than she should. Now I'm wondering if she has an egg she can't get out that's kind of bloating her up??
 
ok, what helps my gals with egg binding is a warm bath, let her soak in the tub for awhile, that will relax her and you may be able to tell what is going on, also- is she eating normally, any other issues unusual? i'm new to chickens, so don't have alot of experience with this- another thing i do after the warm bath is put a tums in her water- it adds a quick calcium boost, and massage her tummy- hope that helps
 
Ok, I'll give her a warm bath and report back. THanks for the help, I'm just really freaked out by this and don't want to lose another pet - this would be the third in a month

i'll check around and see if there are any posts like it- i know how it is losing them- found my favorite BO hen yesterday in her nest- am totally baffled- will be checking on you and see how it goes
 
Ok. I soaked her in a warm bath (and yep, I got more soaked than her!

Now she's in a big cardboard washing machine box with bedding, medicated water and food. I saw her eat, so I know she still has an appetite. I threw a dark sheet over the top to block out light.

When I had her in the bath, I could see that maybe she has a prolapse. It was kinda bloody looking and I poked it back in, but whenever I'd take her out of the water to put her in the towel, she'd strain and pop it back out. I *think* I finally got it to stay in. Held her in the towel for maybe half an hour - then into the box.

So now I just watch her for a few days? Try to keep her from laying and hope it heals? What should I be on the lookout for?
 
If it pops back out again smear it with some prep h before you push it back in. If you don't have any prep h on hand and can't get some you can smear it with some vaseline and sprinkle (heavily) regular white sugar on it. Sugar will draw the tissue in, not sure why it works, but it does. Good luck with her.
