I have 3 new chicks, all supposedly about 10 days old from the feed store. I have had them for 3 days now. Two of the chicks are growing feathers noticeably, on their wings and little tail feathers sprouting. The barred rock has barely any feathers on the wings and none on the tail. It has probably 3 feathers at the tip of the wings, compared to the other two whose wings look fully feathered. Do BR grow their feathers more slowly than other breeds? It appears healthy and happy, eating, drinking, pooping just fine. Just wondered if they were late sprouters.

While all of my chicks now have at least their wing feathers, there were two that didn't for at least a week. Others grew their wing feathers so fast and long that they were literally past the tail until the chicks body size increased and in some cases the tail feathers began to grow. At least half my chicks have no tail feathers at all still, and one chick still has less than one inch of wing feathers. All but one are the same breed, Partridge Rocks, so it's not breed related, they're just individuals.

Lighter in color or lighter in weight? (my other chicks are not BR, I just have the 1, so I can't compare. but it looks different than my other 2 chicks. One is an EE and the other is RIR.) Thanks

If you post a picture, the BR experts here can probably tell you with a high degree of certainty if you have a male. Males look lighter in their down color and their white bars are wider than the females, giving them an overall grayish-black rather than dark black look, though there are rare exceptions.

I will work on getting a good picture of him today. He doesn't have any feathers to speak of, so you can't really see his pattern of barring yet. But on his head is a wide long splotch that is actually yellow rather than white. The legs do have the darker wash down the front of them.
