Turkey chic mortality rate

I got mine from Sand Hill last year. Being so far from Iowa I had to pay for express shipping and I'm glad I did. Had one dead in the box and the other nine are outside in my tractors right now. Tomorrow night the poults from their egg should start to hatch.

.....Alan.

That's good to know. I've heard nothing but good things about them, and they had a hard to find color I wanted, so I went with them even though they were a little more expensive. I can't recall the woman's name, but she was very helpful on the phone verifying my order had been received via snail mail.

I'm very happy with Sand Hilll's birds. They arrived two weeks before I was expecting them, but the birds themselves are great. Last I looked I've got thirty one eggs hatch out of thirty five set on the White Midgets with two that had pipped and zipped but hadn't actually stuck their heads out yet. If they come out I'll have thirty three and one of the two that haven't hatched was clear so I'm very pleased.

.....Alan.

I have 15 coming from them, 6 that hatched today, and another 18 due to hatch within the next month. For what space I have, for the ones that eventually hatch and survive, I'll probably end up with just barely enough room to keep them all.

I know this post was from 2010, so I may not get an answer, but hopefully someone will hear my call of duress! I picked up 2 Bourbon turkey chicks a week ago. They are here in the house in a brooder. Until this morning, we noticed that one just lays there, seems to be breathing hard. After sifting through some of the threads here, I found that I should add brown sugar & apple cider vinegar to the water. My waterer is a quart jar, how much do I add to my waterer?

skip the vinegar for now. Add only 1/4 tsp brown sugar in a pint of water and offer it. How warm is your brooder, and how good is the ventilation? What kind of bedding are you using, and how often are you changing it?

I just put in a new heat lamp, its pretty warm, & they are not huddled under it but a ways away from it. I was actually thinking that it may be too warm. They have pine shavings, and I clean the brooder twice a day. I went to the farm store today and got some pro-botic powder for their water. I changed their bedding just a bit ago, she/he is drinking and eating.

What does the brown sugar do?
Thank you so much, this is my first time and I am a bit nervous. They are so sweet! (noisy little things!)

the sugar is calories and energy. It's easily digestible but not really too nutritious so it's just a quick boost for ailing chicks. The sweetness, if not too sweet, can also encourage them to drink.

If your chick is panting and has its wings away from the body, it is too hot. Raise your lamp and be sure there are shady or cooler areas it can retreat to. If your chick has its wings pulled tight to the body and is gasping, it may be cold or sick.

A young chick may not figure out to get away from too much heat until it is too late and it dies of heat stroke. Keep the warmest spot on the brooder floor around 95F for the first week.
