Where do chickens like to be pet?

I didn't raise any of my current birds from chicks, but I do have a barred rock who likes to have her "chin" rubbed. She's the only one that will really allow any attention like that. With eggs in the incubator, I'm optimistic to have some positive influence on any of the chicks that hatch. Here's to hoping!

Ok, this is late , but for anyone who truly wants to know their chickens... every single one is different. I have mostly Orpington, Rhode Island Red and Sussex. Now some like being picked up and will demand it , others simply like being stroked. If you want your birds to be friendly and get used to handling, for the new ones my advice it to make a fuss of them just as they roost. The ones which have been ousted from their mothers will adore the attention, regardless of whether roo or hen. They want someone to keep them safe and you are the next best thing. So during the day they remember you and will become approachable.
I do this with birds not hand raised , but those out in the field by natural mother hen. They are quite at ease if you start slowly.

I have so many different personalities I could write a book. Truly, they are the most fascinating bird. One lays an egg on my bed every day. She hasn't missed a beat since first laying. That was months ago. It sounds unhealthy I know, but she is so clean and has not once made a mess. She simply taps on the glass door to be let in, jumps up, and lays. No fuss , no ceremony . And it doesn't matter if I am on the bed reading. She simply snuggles up alongside . For the first time I realize just what a job it is for a chicken to lay. She goes all red, stands up and pushes this egg out which to them is the size of a baby . Truly! Poor wee things go through it every day too!

Another will not roost but likes to be carried to the coop. Torrential rain will not stop her waiting . She will simply stay put until you carry her in. It's odd.

As far as how to pet them... they all appear to like gentle touch almost anywhere. Behind the comb softly is pretty much general . The rooster loves me grooming him which means going through the base of the quills and scratching them gently. I guess it must be tiresome for him to get them all.

Anyway, they all love contact, whether you talk to them with your arms behind your back for those a wee bit nervous, or give them a cuddle or simply a scratch . They are extremely social beings and love attention I find. Don't we all?

The serama roo in my avatar loves to have his comb rubbed. He will sit on my lap, find my hand and put his head in it. He will chatter his beak when doing this, otherwise known as beak-smacking. I’ve heard beak-smacking means the bird is greatly enjoying something. I’ve heard some birds (not just chickens but parrots and such) will do this when going to bed and are comfortable and happy.
