Hi, I'm new here. I may have had a username years ago when I last had chickens, but if so, I don't remember. Anyway, we are planning to get chickens again next year or the year after. We have mooved our coop from our last house, and added a garden shed onto it. We're at the point of planning the run. My husband wants to know what the longest lasting, nicest looking chicken fence will be. Last time, we had regular chicken wire, but after a couple of years, it had rusted into oblivion. We have Chain Link scraps that would probably be enough. We were wondering if there was a better, longer lasting chicken wire to be found without resorting to chain link.

Here is a picture of the oroginal coop and run

And how it is now.

I use black vinyl coated 19 gauge hardware cloth (pictures on my BYC page). I picked it for looks, because our coop and runs are visible from our pool and patio area, and also for security, because even though we live within city limits, we do have raccoons that come by from time to time. Chicken wire isn't predator resistant.

Since we only built our set up last year, I can't attest to how long the wire is going to last, though. The vinyl coating should help, and under that, the wire is itself galvanized to resist rusting.
