chick grit- oyster shells??

okay, now I feel like a terrible chicken parent....I got my chicks last week and yesterday night I have them some tiny pieces of apple and yam to eat as treats - I have not given them any grit....I can get some this afternoon...it didn't even occur to me that this is dangerous for them! Do you think that they will be in trouble if they get the sand tonight - will it be too late? Will they die from a small amount of fruit? Eesh, I feel like an idiot!

Shhhhh, shhhhh, relax..... they'll be fine. One day of small bits of fruit won't kill them. They just can't digest it well, and might sit in their crops a while.

My recommendation is NOT to get "playground" sand - it's too fine. Get "all purpose" sand.

I agree. I use the multi-purpose sand for my girls. It is great for digestion and they love to bathe in it as well. Try not yo worry too much, it will rob you of your joy.

Isn't the paranoia it's own reward?

Shavings for the brooder: $11
Lamp: $15
Feed: $10
Chicks: $90

Running out to the barn in the middle of the night to..."make sure": Priceless

Gave the chicks some sand and they all pecked and scratched it. Soon after (now, this is gross so be prepared), my husband pulled a tick off the dog and dropped it by accident. One of the PR ran over and grabbed it- then took off running in the other direction! She was a crazy woman- pecking it to peices. She finally gulped it down.

We are so proud of our multi-purposed pets- free eggs and tick control. Oh my!

my friend used to take his dog out hunting and when they came bake his dog would be covered in ticks, it would go out and lay in the middle of the yard, every one of their chickend would peck ticks off the dog
