Not sure if it's the fox that comes around every night or what but something is making this gosh awful scream/growl sound and it makes the hair stand up not only on the back of my neck but everywhere. And both times I've heard it around 11pm or thereabouts, I run outside and there's the fox in the neighbors yard then he jumps the fence when I yell at him. It almost sounds like a Tasmanian Devil the way they scream and growl. Do fox make this noise?

Yes this time of year when kits may be moving about fox make that coarse, screeching sort of a bark. It is hair raising. They will also make this sound if you are in the vicinity of their den in an attempt to lead you away.

So sour you're saying that along with the adult that I see out there, there maybe little ones skulking about too? My neighbor said she sees one every morning go between the two houses across the street in a very bushy area with something in its mouth. I hate being in this position of having to protect my animals from something that's just trying to survive and live. I feel very guilty. I know, silly......

Nope no Fishers that I know of. We live in the suburbs and have Coons, Fox, sometimes Coyotes, and Skunk. But I'd never heard that any of these guys would make this horrible noise and the only one I see is the little fox.

Last spring I was hearing a real loud scream that sounded sort of cat like. I researched it and it was fox. My neighbor has seen a red fox in the area. I recently lost two turkey hens to what I believe could have been fox, though I still haven't ruled out coon.

In the last place we lived, which is only about 2 miles west of here (closer to the mountains) we had mountain lions and yes that scream IS blood curdling. It stopped me in my tracks in the middle of the night when I ran out on the porch to see what it was.

I know it sounds crazy, but there is a snake that makes a screatching noise. It's very strange and loud, it is like a chicken snake or some other benign snake, but what a noise~~~! jennifer
