The quote you are quoting is from 2008 and the OP has not been active for almost 2 years.

"DE" is Dematiaceous Earth and if you are looking for a treatment for lice/mites, I would recommend that you find a Permethrin based poultry spray or dust to treat your flock. While DE may have a few "benefits" which most find controversial (you can google the debates), it is not an effective treatment for an active infestation.

Bare butts can also be from feather picking.

If you have photos you wish to share that would be good. Tell us about your hens, their ages, how they are housed, any issues they have, what treatments you have used and what you feed including treats.

Her butt isn't just bare, its very red, actually raw looking and swollen. I have no roosters and she IS the bully. I'm a newbie, don't know about mites or lice. What should I look for? I was just reading over some earlier posts and I think maybe I feed too much left over "people"food. I give them everyday a full plate of lettuce, fruit ,leftover pasta and stuff like that. They eat more of that them their regular food.

I think I"m going to back off treats, only regular feed and maybe a little oatmeal. Maybe tomorrow I'll give some yogurt, they love that. Anybody have anything else? Thanks again for your replies.
Hi, many of my Plymouth Rock Barreds have bare butts, and the ones with the biggest bald patches are also the brightest red.

We don't have a rooster, so i have a feeling the bare spots are from the other mother pluckers. 😁

On some, there are smaller bare spots on their backs as well so i'm like 95% sure that all these bare spots are from plucking.
We looked at each chicken butt closely, took photos of them, then zoomed in on the photo with no sign of lice/mites.

I do sprinkle a little diamacious earth in their nesting boxes and coop floor to keep the boxes/floor free of lice/mites.

My concern is the redness, as it looks like a very bad sunburn, and like it could be painful.

Anyone know what the long term prognosis is? Does it go away? Does it need to be treated?

Winter is ending so maybe they're a bit stir crazy?

The post your are quoting is from 2008 and the Original Poster has not been on in a few years.
If you wish, start your own thread in the appropriate forum, ask your questions and post photos. Photos are very helpful and hopefully we can make some suggestions for you.
Thanks!

Good Morning Terri,
When my girls get the occasional raw booty I cover all bases at once! First I keep their bottoms trimmed to prevent sticky bottom. Once or twice a year is usually enough.
A good dussting of DE directly on them or in a pile of sand where they do their dust bathing wards off lice and mites. I also incorporate DE in the feed for parasites.
For the really raw bottom ( after a booty trim) a good soak in a small tub with a little dawn and Epsom is not only soothing but healing.( she will love it) after she has dried. You can apply an antifungal cream ( like Tinactin)
Prevention is key! I add probiotic to the water daily and keep a continuous jar of feed mixed with goodies like flax, garlic, chilli pepper seed, covered with water and let ferment a day or two…. It’s filled with good bacteria and served as a daily treat they love it!!!since I have been vigilant with fermented treat and water my girls health has greatly improved. No vent gleet or sticky bottom !!!!
