Picking Chicks up from the Post Office

I am ordering my chicks from mypetchicken.com and in the e-mail i was sent they suggested getting in touch with the local post office.  I was wondering though, what do you tell them when you get in touch with them?  Do you just let them know that there will be chicks coming and to look out for them?  In the e-mail I was sent it said that my phone number would be on the box so that they could call me when the chicks arrived.  I guess I'm just wondering what other people did to warn (or whatever) their post office that chicks were coming.

Sorry I keep asking questions, I am just so exited! And asking questions and researching stuff is what I do when I can't speed up the prosses of the chicks coming faster... tongue

It is exciting! Are you ready?
Don't worry about the Post Office, they will call you as soon as they arrive. You can call them and give them a heads up, remind them to place the box of chicks near a warm heater or under a warm light and away from any drafts. 
I have found (in my two experiences with receiving chicks in the mail) that the POs in my area are on their toes about this.
Do you have a date from the hatchery when they ship?

In the big coop:  Cleo EE, Brownie SS, Barbie BR, Coco CW, Wynona GLW, Lacey SLW, Sophia GC, Heidi GL, Myrtle PR, Bernadette D, Cookie CM, Buffy & Goldie BO

In the little coop: Nora SLW, Pee-Wee BR, Mulan RP, Rouge RP, B1 BO, and the Raptors x3 EEs.

When we ordered ours, I called the PO to let them know the expected delivery date. They called me the morning (early in the morning!) they came in and I was able to rush out and get them right away. I would call your PO just to let them know you have some coming, but I wouldn't call them this soon. Wait until a few days before and then call. Especially if you live in the city, or where people don't always get orders of chicks. Out in the boon docks (lol) people get them all the time the PO's out here know what to do! big_smile Good luck with your new peeps! You'll love them! tongue

Thank you!  Yes, I do live in the city, and I doubt our post office has ever gotten a shipment of chicks, therefore I'm sure they could use a heads up tongue . Jeeze i dont know what i would do without this website, out in the city there arent many chicken farmers you can go to for help... tongue

You can call the post office to let them know to call you as soon as they come in. Usually mail arrives at all hours and people are hesitant to call at 1 or 2 in the morning. If you dont mind a call at that hour, call and tell them it is ok. I know that I wanted mine as soon as they came in. wee

Chickens are sent by Express or Priority Mail so they will most likely come in either early in the am (around 7am) or later in the afternoon (around 4:30 pm). If they come in late at night, the PO will hold them until morning.

When I got mine shipped, they were shipped with a tracking number (which I paid for) so I knew exactly where they were the whole way here! I was on the computer all day watching them get closer! tongue When I checked it after dinner time and saw that they were in Wisconsin, I knew I'd get the call in the a.m., and I slept better.

My PO lady says they call first thing cause they hate to listen to them all day LOL.  I usully pick up my eggs too.
Ya'll forgive my mispelling my 5 month old is bouncing on my lap. C

Ahaha, I would readaly go in to the PO at 2 in the morning if it meant I could get my chicks! tongue
Although, since they are supposed to get here wednessday, if I woke up at 2 in the monring to get them I would still have to go to school that morning... so I'm kinda rooting for about 6ish in the afternoon that's a nice safe time. tongue
