Yup. Some people who need to get rid of their horses quickly because they're either sick, too poor, moving, or what ever sometimes give away their horses for free or a dollar. My aunt's friend had to do that when she had her baby. 
Sounds cool. Maybe if they don't want it you can have it.
Maybe you can check out a horse rescue place nearby.

For me: I have been lately. I'm interested in rescuing PMU mares or Thoroughbreds who are about to be put down because they were injured or not good enough for racing. Though, they aren't nessicarily the easiest to train, the PMU mare's at least (they don't get attention and pretty much never get handled).

I always check them out, too. My dad's been talking to me seriously about getting a horse, too, especially from a rescue(: I found a really nice Paso Fino mare I've had my eye on. She's so gorgeous and talented I'm afraid someone else will grab her before I have a chance! I love looking at Thoroughbreds, too, but we don't have many rescues around here, especially for ex-Racehorses. Oh, the joys of living in Small Town, WI.
