I found a couple of threads here about the animal repellent called Shake Away but nothing about raccoons. Their "Large Animal Repellent" at $14.95 for 20 ounces is supposed to keep raccoons away.

Hey, I'll sprinkle (pardon the pun) ANY kind of critter urine around my coop if it truly DOES repel raccoons.

Does anyone have any actual experience using this product around the coop? Does it work?

Here's their sales spiel:

Do Your Own Raccoon Control.
Use Shake-Away All Natural Repellent. It's Safe and Easy to Use.

Very smart and persistent, raccoons are challenging animals to control. Because they thrive around people the list of problems they can cause is long. From entering your home through pet doors, to pulling the shingles off your roof, to tearing apart your trash bags, to feasting on your chickens, nature's little bandit will invade your spaces until persuaded otherwise. Calling in professional raccoon control can put a big dent in your pocketbook. Let Shake-Away's guaranteed raccoon repellent formula work for you in effective and economical pest control.

Shake-Away the Strongest Raccoon Deterrent in Nature

What is Shake-Away raccoon deterrent? Shake-Away is a powerful granular product that takes advantage of the strongest motivator in the animal kingdom, FEAR. Shake-Away for Large Animals capitalizes on knowledge passed down for generations by woodsmen to give you proven raccoon control.

They have known how to influence animal behavior by using the very tactics the animals use. Animals often use urine as a tool to successfully attract and repel animals. By infusing our powder with the scent of the raccoon's most feared rival, the coyote, Shake-Away brings to you the natural and effective tactic for animal control, FEAR.

Just sprinkle the powder around the areas you want to protect and your raccoon pest will be convinced that a coyote is nearby. Not willing to take the chance of becoming the predator's next meal, the pest will look for another spot for food and shelter.

Raccoon Control that's All Natural, Safe and Easy to Use

Other methods of pest control may have left you discouraged. Some of these other methods are time consuming, messy and some are even harmful to you and your family. Shake-Away is an effective, economical raccoon deterrent that does not come with those types of disadvantages. Shake-Away is different.

* Shake-Away is a simple, easy to use powder-Applies in minutes.
* Shake-Away is mess free-NO messy liquid overspray, NO complicated applicator assembly.
* Shake-Away is economical to use-Shake it where you need it-NO wasted product.
* Shake-Away is 100% Organic-Safe to use around children, pets and plants. Shake-Away will not harm the pest animal.
* Shake-Away is guaranteed!

We used it and it seemed to work on our psycho raccoons, but it definately freaked my dogs out for about a week. They kept patroling the yard looking for the wolf/coyote/bear (and in some spots me after a few beers) hiding behind the fence.

Does Shake-Away make freak the hens out or do they seem to not notice it? We have squirrels getting in the hen house during the day. They are stealing bedding, food and maybe eggs.

Don't waste your money. Repellents are gimmicks.

I actually bought that crap years ago to keep the neighbors army of semi feral cats out of my flower beds. It was the fox/ coyote urine granules. My flower beds remained the neighborhood litter box

FYI, as a trapper coyote and fox urine are used at trap sets and I catch as many raccoons and opossums in canine sets with urine as I do canines. Personally I think the manufacturers of these repellents should be charged with fraud and the products be pulled from the market but you know what Barnum said about suckers. I prefer the saying about a fool and his money. But if it floats your boat here you go.

Maybe so, maybe not... There are a LOT of positive reviews for a liquid spray (comes in a gallon size) regarding squirrel repellent attributes.

I need to get the squirrels under control before my fruit trees and strawberries start setting fruit - willing to try it. Live in the city so I can't simply shoot the squirrels (would love to, because they are nothing more than cute rats). Thankfully the squirrels plaguing my backyard are grey squirrels which aren't an 'endangered species' in California.

A good pellet gun works wonderfully...

I had thought of that.. two problems: First of all, as absurd as it may seem, the discharge of a pellet gun IN San Francisco is 'illegal' (I have the single quotes around illegal because as you might guess the NRA and some other groups are challenging the law). I think they put the law in-place because in some areas, youths were shooting out windows of businesses or something stupid like that.

Second problem is that I'm not a hunter - that is, if I am going to shoot the darned things I would like to make sure I shot 'em dead on the first shot rather than simply wounding them. Rather not have anything suffer long.
