Siberian Husky? Good protectors?

The Great Pyrenees is a wonderful guard dog if trained well. The will normally guard anything but they are a very large breed. They will have to brushed alot to. Good luck

Akbash Dogs or Maremma sheepdogs are found to be the best for flock protection. We have a Maremma which we bought as a pup and it protects our sheep and chooks from preditors. They are a very smart dog and when she lays there the chooks sit on her with no fuss.

I have a husky/German Shepherd mix that is the best guard dog ever. I've even had a couple of Lassie moments with her. Maybe the shepherd in her is what makes the difference. We have also strictly enforced pack order with her and I think that helps too. She thinks that she is the lowest thing on the totem pole at our house. That being said she roams the yard and the house freely. I've had chickens and parakeets land on her and the only thing she does is look up at me apparently asking me to get them off her. I've had her walk up to me with a two year old child on her back wanting the same thing. I've decided that we just got very lucky with her. Our older dog that passed away a couple years ago would chase and eat nearly anything in her path. She wouldn't get into cages but if anything got loose she would chase it. She was a pit bull/lab/something else kind of dog. She was very protective of the house and kids though. I loved her for that.

We have a dog we are concerned with around the chickens, he is a Siberian Border Collie mix, he plays with the cats and seems to be more interested in what we feed the chickens than the chickens themselves.... it is hard to figure him out, where the border collie ends and the Siberian is left.

No, definitely not. Huskies are naturally hunting dogs. No amount of training could keep the dog from the chickens. They are probably the worst guard dog for chickens.

Well so far so good, we have been free ranging for about a month now, Chester wants to play with the Roo and that's about it... I was concerned about it but my son has his brother and they free range without one incident, but I will say his personality is not Husky that may have a lot to do with it.

What? Who told you a Siberian Husky would be a good protector for your flock? Whomever it was needs to do some due dilligence. That is, after I finish shaking them by their collar, and shouting at them about their stupidity!

Huskies, while beautiful and fabulous with people of all ages, ARE NOT GOOD WATCHDOGS! Their friendly nature would extend to the rustler and burglar too. In addition, they quite often possess a strong prey drive. Instead of protecting your flock, they would eat them up before any other predator got a shot at your birds!

Please take it from me! I have had Huskies since I was 6. My dog Mina broke out of her kennel, and went on a rampage at the neighbor's coop. Over 40 birds dead, from one dog. She ate some of them, and killed the rest for fun. So sad...and I don't want this to happen to you too.
