Twisters~ do they suck up cars etc?

Hi, Mikey and I are wondering how strong these things really are.
Im sorry you have to have them go through your terrain and sorry that they cause you so much grief and damage.
Do they really take up cars, animals etc?
we dont get them here,
He asked me this question today and I thought id ask you folks over there.
 
We had one hit here last August.

Tore apart houses, big barns, trees, you name it, if it was in the path of the tornado everything got damaged.

They are also funny in regards to it can hit one place and the next door neighbor escapses with no damage. My dad's neighbors lost property, yet dad's place had not so much as a shingle tore off the roof.

The tornado that hit our neighborhood and did all that damage....over a dozen homes destroyed, couple dozen barns gone, did not take the life of a single person, which we are all grateful for.

I dont think they so much as "suck things up inside" as they do pick things up and fling them. They can toss a car a few hundred feet...sometimes more of the tornado is large enough. I have unfortunately been through several. I have seen, with my own eyes...a piece of straw embedded into a tree trunk... a 2x4 shoved THROUGH a tree. With a direct hit, a house can seem to explode like a bomb hit it. There have been reports of small children, sucked from the parents arms from inside a home, and landing several hundred feet away, and living.( by the grace of God) I wish we didn't have them here, as we are in what meterologists call..." Tornado Alley" We do have a basement...but I still get scared, when there are reports of them "possibly" being in our area. We are about 15 to 20 minutes from town, so we would be the LAST place checked, if one hit.

I know that if you dont have a basement (which you really should) that if your close to a cement bridge that hiding under there woukld work. it has to be really wide though. I saw that on worlds most amazing videos.

Couple of those places are just across the street from my mom and dad's home.

My farm is about a 1/4 mle away from the closest place that was hit. Too close for comfort.
 
Here's some pictures from a tornado that wiped out the town of Greensburg Kansas last May 4, 2007. There was only the grain elevator and a few homes left standing. I took these pictures a week after it hit when we went to help a friend who lives there. He lives on a farm outside of town so his house was spared, but several people we know who lived there lost everything. It was a town of around 1300 people. Pictures don't do the damage justice. I wept when we drove into town.

I have seen barns fall down on cows before. Not a pretty sight.

I can't imagine that a twister/tornado wouldn't care whether it picked up a cow or horse any differently than a building.
