baby id .......now "the little moorhen diary" **updated pics**

I'm not sure that is an American Coot or "mudhen" as they are sometimes called. The picture in my Peterson field guide shows a chick, which has yellow legs and an orange-red head. The adults, and I would assume the chicks, have lobed feet for swimming. There don't appear to be any lobes on your chick's toes. I couldn't find anything that it resembled, maybe your local game and fish office could help identify it.

sorry guys bad news....

the little guy didnt make it

yeah. its sad.
i came back from work yesterday morning and he wasnt looking to good, legs sprawled out and so, lethargic. i put him back under the heat lamp and he perked up slightly, not much, then he tried to swim but struggled so badly to stay afloat, i pulled him back out and removed the water. just 2 hours later he was gone.

i know this is an old post but some info about the "finger" its an appengage that the chick uses to works its way through reeds and to climb onto the nest as those who have seen coot or moorhen nests they are in the water but elevated so the water doesn't get to the eggs during incubation but these are only temporary and are absorbed into the body similar to the wing claws of the hoatzin chicks which serve the same purpose
