sebright thread

Ok...I have had 2 Silver Sebright chicks for about 6 wks now. I ordered 15 mixed bantams from Cackle and they are supposed to come in on the 6th. I am out of town right now so I put a delay on shipment when I ordered them.
After ordering, I started thinking about reading that they fly much better than LF. Does that mean they are going to fly over my 6' pen fence????

I have tried to let mine free range and they don't WANT out. lol We have a 6 foot tall fence as well, but we have a fruit tree net over the top. She only tried to jump out once but it was because she got spooked. Now that I want her to come out and play, she won't. =( I wouldn't worry too much. They seem content where they are at most of the time. ;)

I actually just sell eggs and picked up the Bantams for fun.  I'm just afraid that since she's so tiny, she will get beaten up by the other chickens and I didn't want to pen her alone, so thought a roo might be a companion for her.  I guess she would actually probably prefer a hen though, so maybe I can put her in with the D'Uccles if they don't get too much bigger than she is.

Is she by herself now? I would combine her ASAP with similar aged birds so u don't introduce it by itself to a flock. It will defend itself against a couple and prob gain some dominance being a sebright but not against many. But if I were u I'd keep her:)

Thanks! She's actually in a group of 15 youngsters now that contains one of the D'Uccles, a few Silkies, 2 Buff-laced Polish bantams, 1 OEGB, 2 Cochin bantams, and the rest are EEs. I just put them all together this weekend and there haven't been any fights. I think it was because they came from 2 pens of 4 and 1 pen of 7 and I moved them all from their own pens into a new pen. My other D'Uccle is too young to be with them atm, so I was thinking I would combine her with them later. The Sebright isn't aggressive currently and just follows the OEGB and the young Cochin roo around. It's kind of funny because the OEGB is solid black and the Cochin is white, then you have her following them around all black and white.

Also, one more question. I notice that the photos posted on this thread show Sebrights with bright red combs, but my girl's comb seems more purple/lavendarish, like her legs. Is this because she's hatchery?

I love these guys coloring!

That's interesting:) I was told at a show when looking at hens you want a nice dark/blackish head, NOT red. Now ill say gypsy rather than that haha:) For roosters, red is what you want right? I haven't got a poultry guide yet or else I wouldn't b asking these obvious questions....

According to the 2010 APA Standard, a purplish-red is preferred in both sexes, but bright red is often seen in the cocks. However, there is no point deduction for this.

Oh, thanks so much for answering my question! I might try and get some pictures of her comb this weekend and better pictures of her in general. I think she's gorgeous, but then I don't know what she's supposed to look like..lol.
