Dang cat scratches! Why do they have to hurt so bad!!!

When I was living in an apartment I came home to find a cat sitting on my doorstep one morning. I felt bad for it thinking it had got out of its apartment and thought this was home. I picked it up to take it to the office, as we lived on a very busy street and I didn't want it to get run over. Well I didn't have enough time to put it down after it started growling before it sunk its teeth into my thumb and raked its back claws down my arm. The apartment office had to call animal control as it had no tags, and we had to keep it cornered until they got there. Needless to say it jumped off the balcony and ran off 30 seconds before they arrived. Luckily the maintenance man recognised the cat from one of the apartments he'd been working in, so animal control waited for the owner to get home.

In the meantime I was on my way to the ER, where they gave me every shot under the sun. My hand swelled up to twice the size, and I couldn't work for a week as I was waitressing at the time. Two nights later I was sitting at home and noticed a red line running up my arm from the bite. I called my bf (now dh), and he told me to get my butt to the hospital ASAP as it could be blood poisoning. Another antibiotic shot later, and after two weeks of medication the swelling finally went down. So my advice after all of that, and an $800 hospital bill as I don't have insurance, is never ever handle strange cats. Luckily the evil feline didn't have rabies, but I wish i'd sued its owner, as the cat was 'illegal' anyway.

Cara, my friend at work went through the same scenario. Her hand puffed up to the point it hardly looked like a hand anymore! She was hospitalized for IV antibiotics for a couple of days.

For less serious punctures, (superficial scratches) that are painful and red, I like Neosporin with pain reliever. It is great for a sore hangnail, too!

THIS IS NO JOKE!!!
CatScratch Fever is NOT just a Ted Nugent song. It is a very real illness that can be fatal. Cats carry some very nasty things in their systems that come through into their feces and since cats scratch and bury it....
If your hand sweels, or the red area starts spreading, go to a doctor IMMEDIATELY!
Any time you get a cat scratch you sould scrub it out with antibacterial soap ASAP. and keep an eye on it for a couple days

For the future if you get scratched by a cat just take some rubbing alcohol and wipe it on as soon as you can. It will clean it and take the pain and itch away. Learned that in Vet assistant school.

The best thing for a cat scratch, no matter how minor, is to IMMEDIATELY SOAK the scratch in hydrogen peroxide. I know there are all sorts of new opinions about how one shouldn't use peroxide on injuries, but nothing gets rid of the sting like it does, in my opinion. Of course, it takes a couple of seconds, as we all know that initially peroxide itself stings terribly.
Also, cat scratches are full of every kind of germ you can imagine. The peroxide bubbles those bugs right out!

It's all better now! The cuts are barely noticeable and I don't have them band aided any more. Not to worry. I am highly allergic to cats but that's why I have them for barn cats and are not allowed in. I have a petting stick I use to pet her with when I'm outside... it's a toilet brush !!! Unused for it's original purpose of course. LOL

She's been a barn cat for 15 years now and ever since she showed up, there hasn't been a single mouse or rat in the house! No idea how old she was when she showed up. She's doing her job still, even if it's her smell that keeps them away. Can't say that about the chicken areas though.

I did immediately wash it out and run it under water and covered it with neosporin. Went so fast I didn't even give the cat her treat, up and left with the rest of the dish! That night I coated it over with my hand medication as I have exema and contact dermatitis. (Later that day the cat just came up and stood on her back feet like a rabbit because she does know shes not supposed to paw up on anything. So she did get her food eventually.)

I am so glad I have never been bit by a cat! That would probably send me to th ER too! A drop of their saliva on my hand makes my skin itch and swell!

I may try that hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol next time. I spilled 95% ethanol on my hands once and I could feel exactly where any abrasion was alright. Boy that burned. And that is why they always tell you to use gloves in lab!

Diana,
I am allergic to cats also, but fortunately can pet them if I run wash my hands and arms right away. It is not fun to have a reaction to a cat scratch...

I take allergy shots, but cannot take cat serum because I get too bad a reaction. Go figure...
