hatcheries shipping to Hawaii

Aloha fellow hawaiians!  My husband and i are looking into getting chicks around the beginning/middle of july.  we live on oahu.  we want to get 7-8 ladies -a mixture of light brahmas and barred plymouth rocks.  we will make every effort to get our chicks locally; however, this might not be doable.  i'm feeling set on the breeds and that timeline is pretty much as early as we could go; might need to push it back a couple weeks even.

so, ordering from ideal or my pet chicken or whoever might be our only real option.  and before you warn me, i know the shipping costs are going to be painful. i know a handful of hatcheries do it though. but what i am most worried about is the chicks making it. will it be too hot by then? it will be getting on to high summer and hawaii is a distance.  does anyone have experience doing this?  are any of the hatcheries better at shipping than others?

I would go through my pet chicken...it will be hot though.

Have you checked with Dept of Agriculture? This is just a partial list of regulations that I remember:
pre arrival 7 day isolation fro mosquitoes under the supervision of an accredited vet
Must come from a flock with a pullorum-typhoid clean rating, must be tested 30 days of entry to Hawaii
must be leg banded with numbers that match the cvi statement from a vet
vet statement that they are free of parasites.
Newcastle's test within 14 days of entry

All in all it will be very hard to do and very costly. Please stay local, there is a good hatchery on Oahu. Asagi's Hatchery. They web site is www.asagihatchery.com

I suggest talking to your county Extension Agent Office, in the phone book under county government, and explain what you want to do.  They should have the resources to find answers to your questions and may know of local suppliers.  They would know if there are any local chicken organizations you could contact, like maybe who puts on chicken shows?

Have you considered getting hatching eggs and an incubator?  You are a lot less certain about how many would hatch and you would have to have a plan to deal with roosters, but if you are absolutely set on those breeds, it may be an option.

aloha,
we just ordered 26 from ideal,they are kind enough to deal and do all paperwork needed to ship chicks
other hatcheries were not able or willing to offer this service,so we were limited with choice here in hawaii
we are due to receive them around june 19 we are a little worried about journey so we tried to time it not too cold or hot time of season for the best shot
we will inform you of arrival and shape of chicks,we are aware of the work and process to vaccinate and provide a sterile start
there are chicken lovers here that are willing to offer advise and help to do this yourself we found some as we are new to this as well
asagi hatcheries are local but carry only a few standard breeds and have small hatches of speciality breeds so if you have a breed in mind like you do i think we have to look around
i will be visiting asagi today as they are having chicks hatch today???never seen this???they have araucanas not sure if standard or bantam
ill post after the visit to see if we get a chick or two....

this dept of ag info is good to know.  i am aware of asagi and as i stated in my original post, "we will make every effort to order locally."  that's what i want to do.  but so far asagi has been rather non communicative.  i know about the hatch they are having today, but we won't have chicken having capabilities for over another month.  so, i am hoping asagi does another heritage hatch this summer, but no one is getting back to me about that. 

ordering online was my backup option but now, given this new info, maybe it's not.  i had pretty much decided to order from my pet chicken (if it came to that).  they have info on there about how they ship to hawaii and take care of all the paperwork and how the orderer just has to make sure that MPC has enough advance notice.  plus i can order only 8, which is about what i'm looking for.  i was unaware of the additional requirements once the babies are on island. 

hayn lei'rs:  i'm very curious about your experience since you're the only once who seems to be currently living this reality.  so in addition to the paperwork that ideal is taking care of for you, what do you have/are you planning to do?  and let me know how it goes at asagi today.

ridgerunner: i hadn't  considered the incubator option.  we are going to be a small suburban operation, so i've assume that that would be cost-wise, ridiculous. but perhaps i'm wrong?

Incubators can be expensive, especially for a one time operation.  Maybe you could find one on Craigslist.  Your county extension agent might have some ideas.  Some schools use incubators to hatch eggs in class and often the extension agent gets involved in that.  Maybe put up a sign in the feed store if they will let you.  The down side to incubators is that you have to have a plan to deal with the roosters and you never know how many will hatch out, especially with shipped eggs.

Or maybe you can find somebody on this thread that has one.  Several Hawaiians on here.

good news.  went over to asagi today and had a chat.  sounds like they will be able to accommodate me by hatching my requests for me in about a month from now.  takes so much of the headache out of it all.

so, upon further research of my own, almost all of these requirements don't apply to just hatched chicks.  here is the link to the dept of ag website: http://hawaii.gov/hdoa/ai/ldc/birds

and since my last posting i've spoken to an individual who ordered through mypetchicken and he said it was no big deal.  just pick 'em up at the post office when they arrive.

i did try to go through asagi, but it didn't work out.  they seem like great people there though, and ill definitely be buying all my feed and whatnot there.  they carry organic!

Hi midd2005!

I was wondering... did you ever get to order your chicks from my pet chick?  The supplies are all out for 2010 and I was wondering how much they charged for shipping.  I'm looking to get me a few and I like the same types of chickens you do!  smile  I'm just starting out, but I figured since they live a long time, I should get a nice quiet breed...
