How soon before hatching do you hear the chicks peeping inside the shell? I have 2 Buff Orpingtons sitting on eggs that I ordered and put under them on 5/13. Tomorrow will be 21 days, but I don't hear any sound coming frome the eggs. I candled them about 10 after I got them and all but 1 looked fertile. I haven't candled them lately ,though. Should I give them a couple of extra days since the were "mail order"?

If you put them under the thirteenth day 21 will be Thursday. I would give them a while after that. It won't hurt anything to let her sit a few extra days. Sometimes you don't ever hear peeping unless you tap on the egg. Usually that happens on day 20.

The earliest I have heard them is on the 19th day but as late as the 21st for large eggs. They will sleep/rest a lot between peeping so you can miss it if you're not in the same room as the incubator.

Well, my math is really bad! For some reason, I had tomorrow marked as the day the chicks should be here. But, your right-Thursday is day 21, not tomorrow. I will have to wait a few days for my answer. I asked because I had some hens hatch some of my eggs last week and I could hear peeping and scratching the night before they hatched. Thanks!

Try peeping at them! Encourage them to come out....I think you'll starting getting peeps back shortly! I also set my 25 eggs on the 13th and am candling now and setting them for lockdown tonight

Some of my recent batch didn't peep till day 23, and still came out alright,so there's time yet,
Good Luck,
sandie

I set on the 13th too! Only 2 eggs, though. I haven't candeled at all because I kept putting more eggs in. I haven't done lockdown yet (I know!) because I can't get my hatching box to remain stable with temp and humidity. It is my mission this morning!!

Good luck everyone!

Post pictures of your babies!

WOW!! I set on the 13th too! (I guess, because Thursday will be day 21 for me as well) There are lots of us. I didnt know you could hear the peeps before they hatch; that is really cool! Now I will be obsessing over hearing that as well as if they are going to hatch at all!! lol
Cant wait till I hear some little chicky peeps!!
