Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

Interesting. To my inexperienced eyes Sumatra and Cubalaya look nearly identical in many ways. I always assumed that Sumatra was the dinosaur Cubalaya
It's not unusual to assume it, they look similar. Structurally though, they are different. A Cubalaya is more solid in hand than a Sumatra.
Perhaps an older derivative of Java?
That I don't know. I think a lot more has been added throughout the years than we will ever know, some old time breeders added stuff that they never really owned up to, it just leaked out in course of conversation.

If you pick up a Cubalaya and then pick up a Sumatra you find the Sumatra is a bag of feathers while cubalayas are quite solid. Cubalayas were made in Cuba from philipino gamefowl, pea combed malays, and bulldog malays. Also possibly European fowl. At first they were called malayas but later changed to cubalaya .

I wonder what breeds they mixed with Sumatra to make Cubalaya. They're universally impressive chickens
Sumatra had nothing to do with the development of the cubalaya as a breed in Cuba. A few breeders in the US have added it but it was just graded in and later discarded. I tried adding white leg asil and thai gamefowl into my bb reds but after a few generations, the faults came back. So i got rid of all my bb reds. I only raise white cubalayas now and nothing has been added or graded in by me. I believe shamo was added to the cock i got from doc Everett but it seemed to improve size

I am glad that this book was created by Horace S. and is accessible. This, and the earlier APA Standard of Perfection illustrations give some sort of a visual and historical reference for the Cubalaya. Wish there was more information in Public Domain.
I would like to see more historical information like this on the Cubalaya.
