I adore almond milk. My skeptical-of-health-food DH adores almond milk.
The original flavor is good for cereal and things. The vanilla flavor is so delicious, I've been known to blend it with ice and have for dessert.

I want to try it, but can only find it in half gallon cartons and if I hate it, I don't want to have it go to waste.
How does it compare to cows milk?
I love cows milk, but can't tolerate it. I'm not lactose intolerant, because I can eat yogurt and cheese no problem; just not ice cream or milk. I think it has something to do with the butter fat content.
So would it be close enough to cows milk to make a good substitute?
Have you tried 1 1/2% milk? or even lactose free milk? My brother in law is extremely lactose intolerant, but he can drink the 1 1/2 no problem.
I love almond milk. Of course, I love soy milk too, so who knows. My husband doesn't like either. I haven't gotten almond milk in awhile, but you used to be able to get it even in tiny little multi-packs with individual servings (must have been pints or half pints). Maybe ask at a health food store to see if you are just missing it? I'm sure I have seen it in the typical quartish size that you see soy and rice milk in as well. As far as taste, it all depends on the flavor and if it is sweetened. I pretty much went away from soy milk because I didn't like the unsweetened and the one I loved was just *too* sweet. I never liked rice milk as much as soy or almond, but I love rice ice cream!
I just got it a week ago. Don't know if I could drink it straight but a nice difference on cereal--especially frosted shredded wheat.
Haven't tried almond milk yet, but goat's milk is good. A bit of a strong taste that is different, but it's good, imo.
Some brands are truely bad, blue diamond is the best. They offer sugar free vannilla and chocolate. We mainly use it in smoothies, the kids don't mind in cereal. As it is a bit more expensive them milk we use it 50% of the time in ouir house.

That's common in people with lactose intolerance. Yogurt is cultured with bacteria and the first thing the bacteria eat up is the lactose because the sugars are the easiest for them to digest, so there's little to no lactose in yogurt. I'm not as well versed on cheese making, but I think they often use bacteria cultures in the processing, so that would also eat up the lactose.
I'm lactose intolerant, too. Milk and ice cream are full of lactose, so when I remember, I take a dairy digestive supplement before eating them and I feel great. Everyone naturally loses the enzymes over time because we're the only mammels that continue to drink milk after infancy. Some people lose the enzymes early and some people lose them later, but most everyone will lose them. I started showing signs of lactose intolerance in my early teens but one of my college profs (who taught all this) said he didn't start showing signs until his early 60's.
To answer your original post - I've never tried almond milk. I'm the same way as you - I can eat yogurt and I love cheese, but I can't eat ice cream (don't like drinking milk anyway.) I suggest you try using dairy digestive supplements or trying some Lactaid milk before you give up on milk and ice cream.
My reasoning may be lop-sided here, but another reason I don't think it's lactose intolerance is that I can drink skim milk just fine. 1%, 2%, whole milk I can't tolerate at all. Have tried the lact-aid milk, no difference.
I have alot of digestive problems with certain foods and alot of medications, particularly antibiotics. Given any other way but orally I don't have a problem.
No health food stores anywhere around here LOL, so I guess I'll bite the bullet and pay the price for the almond milk just to try it.

I love it. I like the vanilla almond milk much better.
