So Rooster for protection good?

I lost a hen the day we got the rooster and at first we thought it was the rooster but then we left the rooster out of the coop for the night and the same thing happened a hen was ripped out of the cage by the neck but it looked like he gave up or the rooster attacked the raccoon and ran off because the rooster was missing a part of its crown. So that hen died a couple days later and now the rooster protects his girls for his life

Wow, so many responses on the uselessness of a rooster. Makes me wonder why the oldtimers kept such aggressive roosters around, attacking them all the time.

Maybe because the OT's raised chickens and not ornamental pets. Maybe because the OT's were the Alphas and dominated the rooster with techniques such as the occasional boot and carrying them backwards with their head down tucked under your arm.

Of course you can find a super dominant roo that can't be adjusted and in that case, you handle him and introduce him to the freezer. That is a tried & true technique.
