I checked on my girl today and felt the bulging area and it feels like tiny rocks. I'm not sure what to think and I'm not sure how to tell if it's subcutaneous emphysema or something else.

Hi, I am having that same problem with one of my hens right now too!! A few weeks ago I noticed a black spot on her chest, it would remind you of a bumblefoot spot. Then 4 or 5 days ago I was lifting her out of her cage and it was swollen the size of a golf ball. I ran in the house and looked up what to do..Gross as it was, I got all of the liquid and cheesy goo out and put some hibaclens liquid on it to clean it off, the filled up the hole with neosporin: and that is where I am,,, trying to keep that darn hole open...vet wrap on a chicken is crazy...she keeps getting out of it. Bandaids just don't work. The hole is just filling back up with fluid...
Can you send a picture of yours?
We'll see if it is like mine??
I'll go and try to get a picture now.
