I KNOW WHATS WRONG WITH OUR CHICKS!!!!!

i am surprised,,,,a fecal test,,,,hadnt thought of that,,,,alot cheaper than the other test,,,,wish i had known about that earlier,,,,thanks for the info,

Brooder Pneumonia is not what the Veternarian who physically EXAMINED my chicks saw. She ruled out any respritory illness and said they show classic signs of Marek's Disease. Again, My results will be in by Friday. I'm not bashing MM. Things happen. I just want to know what is wrong. My IDEAL chicks that came in 1 day later and put in the same brooder are still healthy and no signs of illness. I am not a novice with birds. As a child I worked with my family rehabing wild birds, my mother and sister raised caged birds, I have hand reared at least 20 parrots(no losses) from hatching (and you don't just put food in the brooder, you hand feed them) and have raised chickens, ducks & geese before.

I did have them vaccinated, both orders. Fox Vally Vet. sent 2 chicks to UW for testing. Were you the one that also received chicks on 2/18.? The PO said there was another order. If you want to email me your #, I can call you.

Ours came into Bassett PO on 3/3. We lost several in shipping (normal) and several at about 1 week of age with different symptoms (abdomens distended, heavy breathing). This new illness started on Sunday. We've got several kids who ordered with us (Slades Corners Lucky Clovers 4-H) and all households are affected. When do you think you'll get results from Fox Valley/UW? I'm just trying to figure out if they'll ever recover from this and/or if they are contagious to my "healthy, walking, growing ones. I do have them isolated for now.

Keep them awy from all chickens that have not been vaccinated just in case. The results are due back by friday, they arrived in Madison today.
Just a note, I haven't lost anymore (other than the ones I took to the Vet.) and they appear to be recovering.

I am having my birds tested tomorrow by the U of Me. Same symptoms as everyone else, hatch date of 3/1, MM hatchery, I have only lost 1 of 50, however there are 16 that now are sick at 18 days old. I will post the results of necropsy when available.

Does anyone know if this brooder pneumonia is contagious (airborne) to surrounding young chicks housed next to infected birds?

Around here we call it hatchery cough. I give my new chicks prophylactic tetracycline for just that reason, I dont want it getting into my flock.

And yes, its highly contagious.
