Crooked toe

Thread Starter

We have our first chicks (4 silkies) and everything is going well other than the fact that our blue one has a case of crooked/ tucked toe.  One of her toes on it's right foot is tucked under,  Is there anything that can be done or is she just destined to be different?   In the heat of the moment/purchase,  I did not even think to give her a good look over,  and did not notice the foot  until we got her home, and by then she was already part of the family.      If there is anything that can be done, great...otherwise no big deal.

Currently a mixed flock of 14...BLRW's, EE,BCM's, BA, BO's, ANCONA, BR, WELSUMMER'S, and SILKIES.

This should be an easy fix.   Here's how to make a splint for the foot.  Use a piece of heavy sticky tape (duct or similar tape).  Cut a small piece about the size and shape of the bottom of her foot.  Spread her foot/toes like they should be and stick to the tape.  Stick another slightly larger piece over the top of the foot/tape splint and fold over the sides to the bottom of the foot/splint.   This should hold the toe straight and also give more strength to the bottom of the splint.   She should be able to walk on this.  Leave on for a week or two... you may have to replace it a couple of times.  But this should "set" the bent toe and should cause her no problems as an adult.   Have done this several times with good results.  Good luck with your chicks!

That was me that posted that photo on the other post. Glad someone liked it!
Here it is again:
If you want to use splints to help, here is a photo of me using carpet tape (duct tape will work too) to help correct curled toes in a few day old chick:

leave on for several days to one week, making sure there is room for the toes to grow.

So glad I found this.  I have the same problem and just splinted my chick's foot.  I tried to put her with the others and they immediately started pecking at it.  I have her quarantined right now...but do you think I will need to keep her separate the entire time the splint is on?  I want to integrate asap.  I don't want her to have a hard time later!

Thanks!

Maybe it just needs to be not so new... you know, a little dirtier so it doesn't stand out so much?  Pencil smudges?   Just a thought... have done this plenty of times and have not had this problem.  Good luck with the toes.

I had to splint one of my chick`s feet yesterday...thank goodness for BYC advice.
I found that when I used a white medical tape over the little cardboard that they were really picking at the little guy`s foot.  I read the advice to use a regular bandaid and switched to that.  I am not sure if the colour just blends in better with his leg/foot colour....or the novelty wore off....but they stopped pecking at it.
Crossing my fingers that the splint works for both our little ones.

One of my silkies has a crooked foot, we tried a splint but it made no difference.
She is completely fine, her foot hasn't effected her in anyway.
Maybe your chick will be the same.

I have splinted one of my chick's toes and it worked.  I also have a hen that has crooked toes and it has never bothered her.  She has 2 that are completly curled to the side and she is just a fast as the others.  Her name is "Crooked Toes"..inventive..I know tongue2
