I thought I would make a neat list of all of the Silkie breeders here on BYC.
I'm calling all of you other Silkie breeders to join in the fun!

I'll start:
I currently raise Silkies in Black, Lavender, and White.
I was interested in breeding pure white silkies, but then i was reading on about a deadly illness that silkies are most incline to get & they must be vacated as day olds..? to protect them from this HERPES related disease = MAREKS & since since most places don't do vaccinations for MAREKS that concerns' me about how this diseases can spread on the air ,could it spread to the rest of my flock..? that I never got vaccinated, so since I read this & im concerned, what do our back yard silkie breeders do about that kind of infection or about or giving MAREKS vaccanations to day old chicks ..? so I was wondering what others do about this problem..? & if there is a vaccine that can be given to silkies directly in their mouth or in their food or water , if any one from the byc silkie group has any answers ,since some say that silkie chicks cant handle the vaccinations & it could kill them ...??? thanks for any help about this ,

All chickens are prone to it, not just silkies so buy from a reputable breeder and practice bio security or buy from someone who vaccinate. We never vaccinated ours and never had a problem cause we bought from well known breeders.

I'm in Maine! And have SUPER broody birds :) Message me, I have several available for sale right now!
Old post im just noticing, but we are in maine and have been looking forever for silkies not sure if u still have the breed but we would be intensly interested. Thank you

We have silkies and honestly our hatchery ($2.99) large fowl cochins have been better mommies and hatch birds. Silkies take a long time to mature. So if you want mothering instinct the cochin may be something to look into. They are relatively hardy birds too.
Old post and thread i know....but we are desperate to find silkies in maine, we tried once to ship live birds but the shipper didn't even attempt to protect them and all 8 perished....sad. sad

Sorry you lost the chicks. What about trying to hatch your own? Many breeders sell hatching eggs. Many breeders will not ship day old silkies. Hope you find some!🥰
