I am new to the chicken world...I am in love but worried to death..didnt worry this much when my 2 sons were born...What are the signs of a stressed chicken. I am reading all the stuff on these posts and it's making me nuts. I have 2 - 5 week old chicks..they are eating, playing, and growing. It has been hot here in NY and 1 of them is open her mouth a lot and panting...it's making me worry even more...Is she just a lil hot or is it something worse..or am I just nuts and the heat is getting to me too? HELPPP..I wanna sleep tonight without worrying about my chickies.

Mine open their mouths, pant and lift their wings when they're hot. Just make sure they have a little air circulation and a way to cool off like fill a 2 liter soda bottle with water and freeze it for them or give them a little pan (like a cake pan) of shallow water for them to stand in to cool their feet. Mine love the frozen bottles of water; they perch on them, lay next to them and drink the condensation that forms on the outside of the bottles. Its always hot this time of year in south Texas, but we're used to it. I really feel sorry for y'all on the east coast; take care of yourselves, too.

Thanks.. I put 2 bottles of frozen water in the coop today..they seemed scared of them..i'm sure once they realize it's cold relief they will gravitate to them more. I just changed their water and added lots of ice to keep it cool for a while. They stayed in their coop all day..they are seem to be afraid to walk down the ramp to go into the run...I figured I'd give them a few days to figure it out.

my chicken did the same thing but u hav to hand feed it and when it keeps panting give it a ear drop bottle of watter 7-8 drops dont worrie if it doesnt help that means its too late it will die my chick died at 20 weeks old i was sad but remember you have other chicks to take care of hope it works out

umm, sorry, but you don't need to do those things. i don't know what your chicken died of (rip) but it wasn't because of the heat. panting is a normal thing they do when its hot.you do not need to hand feed it and you certainly don't need to force drops of water in their mouths.

hope this helps, and very sorry about your loss

In my limited experience a truly stressed bird stands with wings hanging down touching the ground, panting hard and stands with eyes closed. Some panting is normal during the heat of the day. Make sure you have lots of clean water available and a good dark shady spot for them to hide when it gets really bad and they'll be ok.
