Does my dog have ear mites? How do I treat it?

I posted before that my yellow lab mix was extremely itchy, and now I think she has ear mites. th She itches around her ears a lot, and there is some black stuff inside her ears. It is not horrible, but there is a some coffee ground-looking dust stuck to the skin in her ears. Is this ear mites, or is it something else? I am going to take a closer look with a flashlight. If it is ear mites, how do I treat it? We really can't afford to take her to the vet for this right now. I feel horrible that I let this go on for so long, whatever it is. Thank you! big_smile

Ear mites are unusual in dogs, unless you have lots of cats around (or at least they are here in WV).  Clean out the ears with hydrogen peroxide or listerine.  Get as much gunk out as you can.  Many dogs get ear infections - yeast and bacterial - and you may need to pick up a tube of medicine that would take care of either infection.  Otomax was one that was available many years ago...  You can pick up ear drying solutions at the pet store if it is moist in there.  There is also something called Vet RX - for goats, sheep, chickens, etc., that will kill mites in livestock - it's not a prescription and I think it's all natural, so you could try that.  Good luck.

Yes that would be mites. I usually get stuff ffrom the vet but I have seen where people use a little almond oil and it smothers them. You could google for home remedies for ear mites in dogs.

It could also be an ear infection..
my dog has brown stuff in his ears and i brought him to the vets and its NOT mites...its an infection.... he needed meds from the vets .
Ear infections really hurt... i think the dog needs to be seen by a vet to be safe.

The best thing I found for my poodle is called Zymox.I had used a few treatment's from local farm supply etc. with no help.I got this for him and it got rid of the mite's and apparent yeast infection he had also. You can order it from PetMed's.It's a bit pricy But it was worth it to me.My dog has been scratch free since I treated him with it. I just found some on Ebay cheaper than what I paid here is the link. You can compare price's on it.Good luck hope your dog get's better soon.

This will cure infections and ear mites:

Blue Power Ear Wash Recipe:

16 Oz. Isopropyl Alcohol

4 Tablespoons Boric Acid Powder

16 Drops Gentian Violet Solution 1%

Mix together in alcohol bottle and shake well.

Shake this solution every time you use it to mix the Boric Acid Powder.

Thank you, I will buy something to get rid of it. If it doesn't clear up, I will bring her to the vet. I have to bring my cat to the vet for a rabies shot next week, so if I will ask her about it too. smile

I just used PetsBestRx Ear Mite Medicine Pack to keep the ears clean. Spray a little in there, and wipe clean with cotton balls or a paper towel. Just clean the dogs ears a few times a month, and every time after swiming. Before I started doing this, had a dog that got mites  bad thats why I used Q-based Solutions, and that cleared it right up.
