I’ve ordered chicks from Cackle, Meyer, and Ideal, picked up a few from Orscheln’s in Tontitown (Tractor Supply never seems to have what I want when I want them), got hatching eggs from people in this area, but mostly hatch my own eggs.
I got the buff and dark red chicks from Orscheln’s about 8 weeks ago, they were from a Cackle Pan Fry special, and added them to the chicks I hatched from my eggs.
Draye and Puddin, I expect the ones I just hatched to have some more variety than these since they had a wider variety of mothers, but the ones that are not dark red or buff were from my eggs. There are some shade variations and some differences in markings.
Will you be getting some of the Mottling that we saw previously?
Not this generation. The mottling gene is a recessive gene. Since my Buff Rock rooster doesn’t have it, the chicks will not show mottling. But since all my hens have it all the chicks are split for mottling. I’ll save a cockerel from this year’s hatch to be the flock master next year and put him over the mottled hens and some of his half-sisters and get the mottling back. And I’ll only hatch green or blue eggs so I’ll keep that trait.
