Hamburg thread! - Page 16

Excited to join in here!  We finally added some SSHs to our flock of mostly Polish.  A trio of hens and one roo aquired from Pheonix Feather Farms.  Will have to post pix on another day, but wanted to jump in and say "Hey!"

My hamburg is 25.5 weeks old and looks no where near ready lay, i'm anxious to get some white eggs also she is a Hatchery bird and her comb is weird looking.. like it has a spike on the top.  She is such a funny bird, like the watchdog of the flock, she flies up to the top of the fence and paces back and forth  on it, also sits on the top of the coop.  My husband said she is weird looking, like an immature wild bird cause she has a tiny head ") Its ok, I like her.

There should be a spike on the very top/back of a Hamburg comb. Mine as slowing down laying as the days go shorter; how much extra light does your pullet get?

Well she is one of  my first chickens so I didn't know what her comb would look like, it sounds like it is normal .  I have some other hens that are a little older and have been laying since august and her EE sister that is the same age started laying about a month ago!  She is curious about the coop goes in it a lot.  I don't give them any extra light, all my others lay pretty well and there is daylight from about 8 am to 730 pm.  she does seem like there is a little blushing going on.. but not much else.

Mine started laying at about 22 weeks, but that was in May!

My little GS lays a swell egg daily. And because my only rooster is an ameraucana  I guess I will be fixing  to see what that mix will look like. She does like him so that is good. Maybe she thinks that he will protect her.   ha ha.  He is big and white, so the offsprings should be interesting. I wonder if the EEs that result will lay larger eggs. Does anyone have a guess as to the egg production.

I'm quite serious about crossing Blue Ameraucana with SSH to see if I could eventually end up with blue spangled, blue egg laying chickens.

Just on the side, not to replace the SSHs because they are perfect as they are.

I agree that the SSH are the best and you idea of the blue spangled blue eggs layer sounds interesting. It is so hard not to try crossing just to see what can be done. I have an idea for a blue bird that lays blue eggs also. Not with SSH though but I would be interested in hearing your progress.

Haven't posted any photos of my BYC-baby, Elvis; UrbanFarmerGirl raised him from a chick, and she and her husband brought him to me back in June, when he was a mere sprout of about nine weeks. This is him today:



I wish his tail was nicer; I'm hoping his first full adult moult will bring improvement in the mossiness- and he knocked the sickles out on his cage before he got used to his full size! I'm hoping to have him moved in with his ladies before Christmas, but I'm still catching up on the time I lost with a broken rib.

Handsome fellow and since he is quite young he might lose some of the smuttiness as you mentioned. Keep us posted as Elvis grows up into a full blown Mensch.
