is there a way to get the rust and spots off of it? i think it would look better if it were all the same color.

I would take it to some one who maybe works with old toys to have it cleaned up. Don't want to "de-value" by cleaning it up wrong.

Redhen-- awhile back they even made toy irons that plugged in and heated up to iron doll clothes. Sometimes you can find them on eBay. Suzie Homemaker stuff. http://cgi.ebay.com/SUZY-HOMEMAKER-SAFETY-OVEN-ca1968-/130414841801?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e5d548fc9 I've never seen a tin one though

Soap & water is best on old stamped tin items like this. Dawn dish soap works well. Harsh cleaners will take the paint and all off or at least fade it out more. But from a collectibles standpoint cleaning it would lower the value. Most people like the old patina.
