Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome! - Page 1872

Hi Everyone!!!!! Miss you all like crazy! Been very very busy around here....summer is always our busy season. When the sun finally decides to come out in the PNW, so do people and their home improvement projects. I am very grateful.

My 'bator went kaput (should have fired up the sportsman....but no.....put them in the little giant instead he ) and I lost all those beautiful eggs I just set. I just couldn't see turning on the sportsman for so few eggs, but next time.....I don't care...I'm firing it up even if I only have 2 eggs to cook. hmm

I've been gone from here for quite awhile. I've been busy being pregnant!!! big_smile

I'm back because two of my hens were lost to hawks. One BCM and one EE. I'm also selling the Hamburg pair and likely sending another EE to the freezer. So I'll be looking to buy 5 birds.

My Marans are all Wade line. They look like they would have great meat quality. They only lay a 4 on the egg scale. Sherman the roo is a hoss at 10 lbs and two feet tall. I'd like to keep the meat quality and improve the egg quality. I know Davis has the best egg color, but I've never seen Davis/Wade birds. What line would be the best cross? Is Jeane my only option?

I'm also going to be looking for EE's / Americaunas as I will only have one EE left.

I've got to get a new picture of Sherman. He's beautiful!!!! His shanks are rather sparsely feathered, but he is a stunner.

Here at Peregrine Hill Farm my Husband and I have a menagerie... 4 Marans (two BCM and two Blue Coppers) 3 Easter Eggers, 2 dogs (Italian Greyhound Monty and Redbone Coonhound Ellie Bean) 1 cat Misu and 2 horses (Lipizzaner Maximus and Quarter Horse Houston)

I'm new to Marans and have a pair of Splash Marans that hatched from Blue Copper Marans eggs I bought. This is my first time posting pics, so I hope it works! I would like opinions on these birds. Are they worthy of keeping/breeding? They are about 5-6 months old now. Currently, I have the roo separated, the hen is in with my blue copper roo and hens. I'm trying to decide what to do with them, especially the roo. I don't have an extra pen right now to put just this pair together. Thanks for input, I think they are lovely birds, but I haven't seen any before, so have nothing to compare to!

Heritage turkeys: Royal Palm, Blue Slate & Lavender, Mottled Black, and Narragansett

Chickens: Black and Blue Copper Marans, Rhode Island Red (Mohawk line), Barred Rock (Good Shepard line), New Hampshire (German line), Spangled Russian Orloffs, and red and black sex-links. A motley crew of various breeds in my mixed layer pen. Poults/chicks sold locally and shipped. I feed all organic.

The first splash is a pullet not a male.

Don,

We are seldom as great in the eye of others as we are in our own mind.. Look at the photo section at the album and see pictures of my setup. Plan on adding a few pictures shortly.

Sorry, I guess my post was not clear, yes I know she is a pullet, she is the one currently in the pen with my blue coppers, and the second bird, the cockerel, is without any hens in a separate pen.
