Good morning all

  Vicki ~ hope your foot feels better! Hate splinters and other things sticking in my feet!!  Did you get a bunch of snow up there?

We were supposed to get 3" here yesterday, but lucky me, I got 6"!  The chickens were NOT amused, and most refused to even go out into the run. Funny, that the Silkies were more adventurous, and they were out there in the snow getting soaked!   From all I've heard, they don't do well once wet as they get soaked to the skin, but these guys don't seem to care, nor have any gotten sick...yet.  Those girls are laying fools, and they are still burying their eggs in the straw! I collected 12 yesterday from 8 pullets.  The snow was coming down in spades yesterday, it was so pretty. Pip dicovered the furnace room. I had scoured the yard for some wood the day before, so I could have a wee bit of a fire when the snow hit. He was nice and warm in the furnace room with all the cats, and there was NO booting him out the door!  I told him he could stay in there if he didn't growl at me every time I came in there to poke the fire, and he did behave himself. Today is supposed to get into the 40s, so much of the snow should be gone to expose a muddy, mucky mess. Thunder storms tonight and tomorrow morning, then the rest of the week is going to be nice and in the upper 40s and 50s!  My camera  should  be here today or tomorrow, can't wait to take some decent pics!! It has the ability to take quick motion shots without blurriness, so we'll see.

Cadeau ~  One of the Silkie eggs that hatched here recently was picked up in the run, and was so cold, I almost didn't put it in the bator. I even marked it as "COLD" on the egg, and watched it for any signs of cracks or ooze. Wouldn't ya know it hatched??

Morning Debbi!! Good to see you! We got about an inch and a half yesterday here, so not so bad. My foot's feeling better already, I've soaked it a few times in epsom salts and have a nice gauze pad to cushion it over it. I think it should heal really fast, I seem to. 

Tomorrow night eggs go to the hatcher! and then hatching should start saturday! What a great way to end a week!!!!

I have a question, the little black one seems to have some odd down/feathers.  I don't really know how to tell you what it looks like.  Looking at his back he looks spotted.  When you touch them they just fell stubby.  At first I thought it was just dry goo, but after cleaning him it didn't really help.  He didn't look like he was fluffing much.  Anybody know what that is? Should I do something or not worry.  I am afraid if he has no down how is he going to stay warm?

The one on top is the one I am talking about.  Can you see what I am talking about?  The one on the bottom is blue and has feathered legs.

I don't think the black one does.

WoooooHoooT! Babies! Congrats!

Sometimes I get Black Coppers that seem to have very short down...give it some time and it should puff up but will still look like it is "short-haired" compared to the others. I have not had this happen on a blue or a splash, only some of the Black Coppers.

Don once also suggested to me  that this may be indication of the heat being too high in the 'bator.  Also in the Chicken Health Handbook  it says that this kind of down can be attributed to a higher temp and lower humidity rate......but I can't figure out why it would only affect the BCM and not the blues or splash and only sometimes. I don't get BC chicks like this in every hatch only every now and then.

Weird huh? And my 'bator runs spot on temp. wise every time unless there is a power outage. Humidity is something that I always ran at 50ish for the entire time until the last hatch I did and Vicki helped me learn how to raise it.  

Anyway....it will puff up and start to look more normal and will be fine. 

#96 is clean legged by the way....so it won't surprize me if you get a clean legged chick or 2. #92 has nice light leg feathering but no feathers on the outer toe.
 

Hello all - I am starting to get very interested in this breed (with different color varities).  I did notice two major bloodlines - Bev's Marans and Wade Jeane's that I am leaning towards to because I am liking the type, plus Bev seems to breed for the egg color as well (no idea about Wade, but I presume he does). What are the differences between two lines? Would it be expected uniformity when the lines are crossed?  I had heard that Bev has a long waiting list or in some instances a closed list?

Does the French Maran standard differ from the American Maran standard?

Any advise for a newbie appreciated! Thank you!

I think I have pictures of both roosters they look very much alike the youngest one has more copper on his breast but a better shade of copper though I have found that most of the breast copper gets molted out @ 9 months and the rest @ 1 year these guys are only 7-8 months and I would never normally hatch from them but I'm testing to see my faults before I put the pullets back in with their sire and hoping that they will mature nice enough to go into the show pens for this fall-I so want to show my Marans but I need birds that I won't be using for breeding....these 2 were the nicest out of 20-30 and I might single mate my favorite cockerel back to his dam and see what I get.
