Yesterday.....I noticed that he barred all the way down to his feathered outer toes. I also noticed that his sister from the same hatch is barred.......as well as 3 older Splash cockerels. My oldest Splash cockerel (that is F1 Lil' Bill) is definitely barred. Will try to get good photos of them today. Sometimes I feel as though I am seeing things when I look at them.....but I know I'm not imagining this barring.

hmmm....crazy. Is the pen these are from out of one hen or possibly a pen with just one roo? I've had a few show up here and there over time in other breeds, but don't remember them being several at a time...usually one here and there.

I just was outside thinning out chicks and dividing them between more pens since they are growing so fast. I think out of 33, 19 are on the possible list. I have to get ready for work now and get lunch and all that fun stuff, but tomorrow I only work a short shift to help cover for extra help being easter weekend, so I might be able to get some update pics of chicks then. There are a few that look just fantastic and one boy that is showing a bit of overcoloring on the breast, but am not afraid to hold onto him to see how he colors out since I like everything else about him. Feels good to be thinning those down to prep for these next hooligans coming.

Oh, and I'll try to do update pics on the birchen girls too...they are still a bit wild, but they are probably a 1/3 times larger already!

I just checked my regular email and see that Debbi's having problems posting and wanted me to check and see if anyone else is too. She talked with BYC support and anyone else having problems should email support@backyardchickens.com. Hopefully everything will get cleared up asap!

Thanks guys for the advice!

I will look closely at tail angle as they grow.  I think both of them were holding their tails funny...you know how they like to look like dorks the second you snap a pic?  lol

I already culled one of their hatch mates (a splash) for the side sprig he decided to grow.

I have the SOP printed out and am studying them with a critical eye.  I was concerned about how skinny the comb points were in #2.

Now that I have butchered roosters... everyone needs to earn the right to be here.  Crowing already puts them on the list.  lau.gif

we are looking for backyard chickens... sadly were only allowed 5 where we live :( but I I am considering Marans because of most of there amazing reviews, the thing that concerns me is that lots of people say they don't lay well... Since I will only have 5 chickens I'm wondering if it's worth it. Any replies are welcomed :)

I think they lay just fine.  Not like a production bird of course.  If you are interested in mainly getting eggs then maybe they would not be good.  But if you want pretty birds that lay an average amount of really neat looking eggs then marans are your bet! lol
