I can't wait to see which will be bigger. I have (3) 3wk old French Black Copper Marans and (3) English Blue Orpingtons. The EBO's are already significantly bigger. How do you sex the BCM's.

post #33383 of 457344/18/12 at 6:22amHmm - I think it depends on your bloodlines
My Lavender Orp with a lot of English bloodlines is H-U-G-E - way bigger than any other bird here
However - Vicki, and some others, have some gigantic Marans
Time will tell!
The girls here are great on gender!
I can tell my Marans at any time - the others, I can tell 1-5 days and @3.5wks and up...

Pink, Thanks for the kind words for my lil one, she's quite the trooper, antibiotics for now and they pull the tooth next week (when DH is home, yay!) why does this stuff always happen when he's away? It's no small miracle that no one's vomitting, that's their usual plan.
I decided to cull my boy with the white toe feathering, I really needed to down size. Today was my first trip to the butcher with my own birds, I was a bit traumatized ~ still am. I had a weird experience when I was there, kinda freaked me out. I picked up 'take~out' for dinner, nixing my idea of roasted chicken. DS is calling the birds by name and asking who we should eat first. Apparently he is unscathed, I guess it's better than the other way around. I'm sure I'll get over it.
One of my BCM girls is doing the squat and letting the boys breed her, does this mean there are eggs somewhere I'm missing? She is only 15 weeks old, could she really be laying?
I can't speak for all Marans, but around here, when the boys start chasing the girls, it is usually about 2 weeks until they lay their first egg. 15 weeks is pretty young to be laying, so is 17 weeks. Is your pullet in with some young hooligan boys, or an older roo?? The young cockerels of 4-5 months will try their romancing deeds when the hormones start coming and, and they are not too fussy who they try it with!

Me too! Actually, everytime I look at my little Stoo girl, I think of you. She is turning out great and should start laying very soon. I think she is related to Debbi's Bad Charlotte and my Bad Betty....she is always into trouble and likes to check out places she is not suppose to be. Worries the heck out of me when I can't find her. Stinker."When the Power of Love Overcomes the Love of Power the World Will Know PEACE" -Jimi Hendrix

post #33390 of 457344/18/12 at 9:03amYes she did. She is not nearly as petite and prissy as the full blooded Barnie girls are. Must come from the Wyandotte blood in her, but still has a way to go to catch up to Lil' Bill.
Here she is getting a little peck from LB...don't know what she did, but knowing her, she probably deserved it.
