Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome! - Page 3365

Just thought I would share pictures of my favorite splash girl we hatched back in Feb.  She is so sweet.  I think that is a cuckoo pullet in the background.  I need to seperate them all out by breed.

I'm sorry that I'm a nube but I have read about a term on here referring to mossy, but can't find what it means. Also since I have 10 BCM's in need to understand what needs to be culled. Or when buying chicks or chickens what is standard in this line. I'm assuming SOP is a reference?  thanks

Can you? Or is it possible to post photos of each bird individually??? This will help folks tremendously who will be giving you advise.

:-)

Hi, I was posting pics of birds that had problems that I needed advice on, it is hotter than blazes here right now, very difficult and too many birds to take individual pics. Not all the birds look that bad! A couple people did say the mossy look does not go away, so I know to cull those. What about the ones with the white tipped feathers? Cull? I was hoping someone would go down the numbered list of questions and answer each number; I didn't think those questions required a bird photo to go with, and the ones that did, I posted photo.

I just wonder how much time it took for most of you who have been working with this breed for a while to get your birds like you want them. Do you all have a lot of culls still? Weird colors coming out? Mossy look, solid black pullets, that sort of thing? I am wondering if it is the bloodline I started with that is giving me fits, or if this breed is still so much a work in progress that this is expected right now. Because my understanding is, that all the birds in the U.S. today originated with Wade Jeane, so they should all trace back to those birds in some way. If I have that totally wrong, please correct me.

Okay, sorry, didn't see the rest of the photos when I had responded to you query the first time. I am going to go back and find the post and look again. smile.png

The breed is a work in progress and I still cull very hard and I cull alot. smile.png

Like was said, that is one battle I can fight easy.  I cull all with middle toes and clean legs.  I will keep some without feathers on the outer toe, but they may go when they start laying.  If they are roos they just go this year.

I get females with a stub on the middle toe. I don't get middle toe feathered birds often, but I do get them and I cull them. I do not breed birds with feathers on the middle toe..period....it will pass on. I don't even have birds here with stubs on the middle toe and they still pop up in my hatches from time to time.

I will keep a bird with no feathers on the outer toe (and I do) before I keep a bird with the middle toe feather. smile.png  It's just a fine line and we decide which side of the line we want to fight from...but I do say, give me the middle toe feather anyday, I can deal with it.........BUT PLEASE don't give me the STUPID COMB!!!!!!! lol.png
