TOTALLY counting chicks before they hatch .... fl.gif

You betcha! I'll post a pic if I have to go to Photobucket to do it!!!  This White? chick looks more of an orangey color than the last whites I hatched. Maybe it's just the tinted glass on the bator?? Could be a Buff, but I don't know where or whom it would've come from, unless my White roo has some buff in his background? I'll have to wait until I can open the bator, and THAT ain't happening until the Showgirl hatches!! Looks like another Silkie egg is zipping too!!!!!!!!!

It maybe just the way he/she was standing when you took the picture, but if he holds it that way all the time, something is wrong. The ruffled feathers could be from someone picking on him from the othe place.

No, she normally holds them both "high and tight'.  LOL.  We had just gotten home from the swap and I'm sure she was tired - I know I was.  The swap was Saturday so it's been a few days and she's still 'ruffled'.  I pick them each up several times a day but I'm always careful about messing up their feathers, and they've gotten so much better about being held that there's not usually much struggle to it.  Maybe she just got so much handling at the swap that her feathers got bent and broken?????

well my black copper marans are starting to get color on the head and necks.  My wife adopted a couple 5week old chicks from a relative.  They are cross between silver laced wyndotte roo and cuckoo maran hen.  Any thoughts on which they favor more and sex?

Ok, well I'm glad her wing is normally held correctly. Do the feathers looked curled at all? If you got them at a swap, they were probably in a cage for awhile, maybe someone else was laying on top of her and messed them up? Take a damp, warm paper towel and hold it on the feathers for a minute or so, and see if they don't calm down. Just a guess here, maybe someone else will chime in?

First one is a roo, and favors the Cuckoo more. Second is a pullet, and must favor the Wyandotte, as it looks nothing like a Marans to me. JMO

You know how the subject of broodies was the hot topic not too long ago? Well...I think my birds must have been eavesdropping, thinking its a good idea to join the party. I have 9 Marans, 6 sussex, 5 wyandottes that are all broody in the last two weeks. barnie.gif Talk about getting the stink eye when it comes time for chores and collecting eggs. th.gif

Dang!!! barnie.gif

Canadian dew may put feathers on legs where they don't belong but it does NOT motivate the girls to sit on eggs. So far.

Dang is right! I have 2 Partridge girls now sharing a nest with about 8 eggs. The Black pullet in pen 2 is still sitting tight on what I can only imagine is a dozen or more eggs, and her White friend goes in an keeps her company. So far, none of the Marans have showed any more signs of broodiness since Olivia.

gig.gif Well, you may be...  One more Black Silkie hatched for a total of 5 now. One more is slowly zipping, and one more big pip. The pip hasn't shown any signs of life since last night, so?? Pip on the SG is still the same, but it's coming on night, and mine usually hatch best at night. Once that SG hatches, I'll be thrilled!!  Then time to clean the bator and hit Randy up for some more Wheaten eggs....THEN I will be done for the summer!
