My heritage BR is leggy like that but he is growing into his legs and is getting a nice wide body to go with the legs.  hu.gif

I only have pics of my Splash Cuckoo and he looks nothing like that.  But he was mature when I got him and I have not grown up a cuckoo roo yet.  But I don't see any difference in them as chicks.

I can't see his comb well, but it looks like more of a Pea shape to me? I don't have any of those around here, Donna, what can you see there?

I don't see a pea comb.  It looks like a short straight comb.  I have some blue rocks with little or no comb height.

Thanks guys! Unfortunately he came to me through "a friend of a fellow byc member", so i cant get any of my questions answered from the breeder. All i know is that he is a golden cuckoo "project" bird. Maybe she is just beginning introducing the gold into the breed? I suppose it is entirely possible for him to be a cross if she introduced something else in there for the gold color, but i dont see why she would do that. You guys would know better than me though, since youve actually seen young marans roosters before, lol.

Also he does have a straight comb but it is SO SMALL! :( I feel like by four months old it should be much bigger and redder by now. I want some big handsome wattles! Oh Gregory Peck, youre so dissapointing.

Heres another shot of him settling into bed. Sorry for the poor camera quality, i just realized that my lens had a bunch of scuzz all over it.

him next to my barnevelder for size comparison (his showgirl girlfriend in the foreground- because he follows her everywhere.)

Here is a picture of his wings and hackles. he used to be all cuckoo, this has popped up in the past couple of weeks. I LOVE IT> I really wanted a lot of color in my rooster.

Debbi, This one is for you! Gregory peck was brooded with showgirls, and so thats who he hangs out with all the time. Its adorable because he is way larger than them but is the first to run from ANYTHING.

Ok, those are much better pics. The last one makes him look more Marans-y to me. big_smile.png  He does have a smaller comb than I am used to seeing at that age, but some lines do mature at a slower rate than others, and even within the varieities they can differ. He is still very young, and has a lot more growing to do yet. In another month or so, when the hormones start to kick in, he should go into a growth spurt. My BCM males (Black Copper Marans), tend to get large quickly, but aren't completely at a mature weight and fullness until around 18 months. I'd almost bet in another month, you will look back at this pic and not recognize him as the same bird! Love the Parti SG, by the way! wink.png

mornin debbi.....much cooler this A M....wish it would stay that way!

I tried to candle those birchen eggs last night, but the batteries in my candler went dead, so I'll have to get some and try again today. I didn't see any that were weepy, but there is no guarantee....I don't trust them 100% since kim had problems with a couple of stinkers.

Mornin' Vicki.  Yes, really nice here this morning, but it's supposed to be just like yesterday here again. No rain in sight either...

Hope you don't get any stinkers! I've had a few, though none of them have ever weeped or exploded. I'm sure it will probably happen at some point in my future though if I don't get a  good candler!

I've lucked out and never had a stinker....so I'm not really wanting these to be where I find out about them

Golden Cuckoos can throw some that look more like Reg Cuckoos.  Just watch him.  Post pics again in a few weeks, when he grows into those legs lol.png

Ive always wanted a BCM roo because i think they are just GORGEOUS., but instead when the opportunity arose, I accepted a day old cuckoo/golden cuckoo marans cull (non feathered legs).

Hes turning out alright, taller than heck...Id have liked to see a lot more gold by now but its a project bird so whatever. My question is that he is four months old now and has the tinyest comb and wattles. Of all the pictures Ive seen I feel they should be a lot bigger by now. Is he a slow grower or is he doomed to a life of comb inadequacy? I really held out on getting a large roo for a long time because I can only have one, and i wanted him to be the biggest most gorgeous colorful gigantic combed beauty ever. So far were batting a thousand with comb and color, LOL. (plus his personality sucks...cant get anywhere near him!) At least hes got legs for days. Heres Gregory Peck.

He does have a lot of game in him I bet. I have some blue copper marans x key west crosses (lots of game in them) that have that same look to them especially their legs. The tail kinda fans out on your guy a little as well....Maybe some Old English game type in him?   He will probably be a sweet pretty boy.
