Headgear, I assume the male in you Avatar is a wheaten Marans, Come over to the Wheaten Marans thread and will explain how to breed the Cotton out of the tail Coverts.

Holy Cow, I didn't know there was a Wheaten thread.  I also have black tail buffs and golden cuckoos.  I'm going to be busy!

Yes, there also is a Cuckoo and White thread.

Don,

We are seldom as great in the eye of others as we are in our own mind.. Look at the photo section at the album and see pictures of my setup. Plan on adding a few pictures shortly.

Boy did that help!! Cooled the house off by about 6*, so we will be doing that again tonight. Uma got a good night's sleep, as I did, and she was up and eating this morning. bow.gif Vicki, looks like we have a 40% chance of storms tomorrow! I sure hope this one does more than just put on a light show...WE NEED RAAAAAIIIIINNNNN!!!

Good deal! I didn't think about the jug of ice cramping her lounging style haha. I'm glad you are finding something that works tho! So glad to hear she is eating!

We've got a 70% chance of rain for around 8pm tonight and then a 40% for the rest of it through til morning. I'm praying we get some soon!

Vicki - how did your birds do?

my birds are in a holding pattern, I'm hoping that they can make it til we get to cooler weather....who ever thought I'd say the 90s would be cooler weather?

And dark blue leakage spots/stripes on all my blues(which I hope comes out. Dont know if it does). I have 6 pullets and 1 roo left. I know a few of these I shouldnt breed either but I will test them out to see what I end up with. So frustrated beyond belief.barnie.gif I have spent a lot of money trying to get a decent flock together. Sad part is I dont need a huge flock. I had know Idea these birds needed this much work. I know not to expect perfection but this is ridiculous. If I dont start seeing results from my efforts Im done. I can just as easily throw my money down the toilet or out the window. Im down to 14 eggs in the bator out of 23 due to hatch Aug 1. We shall see!

Believe me, I feel your pain! I am a small breeder too, and just wanted some nice birds for a small flock. All I have gotten pretty much in the last almost 3 years, is crap! All of the above faults you listed and then some. I have literally culled off 3/4 of my flock and am basically starting over with the best of what I had left. Here's to hoping! The breed is new and still needs lots of work, so if you are in a hurry, cash it in now, it is not a race, and only time and strict selection will win over. I had to get another breed just to make me feel better! lol.png I really lucked out with the Silkies, 14 out of 20 shipped eggs hatched, and in the first hatch pretty much all of them were very nice chicks. But the breed has been around a long time, and there are many more breeders of quality birds out there for the norm. Not so with Marans. In the meantime, I will just slow down, cull heavily, and enjoy what I have. Eventually, the nice flock will appear.

Oh yes, The Princess does not like change...hmmm, wonder where she gets that from?? lol.png It's only 92* in the house this afternoon, so tonight ought to cool off well. They bumped our rain chances up to 50% now, and right now the clouds are coming in and a strong breeze is blowing!! Thanks to all doing the rain dances, at this point, it can't hurt! lol.png

Lost another hen (2nd one) to the heat... went out to feed them watermelon and a head count came up one short, she was sprawled under the coop. Darn this weather! Am looking at the radar and see a very few teeny little storm clouds scattered to our west, here's hoping that one (or more!) makes their way here and drop some much-needed moisture, if not the temperature bow.gif

Bless your heart, I know what a sad feeling that is, especially with all the extra work you put into it in this kind of weather. Hang in there, it's bound to get cooler by winter?? Storms look like they may start popping up here too, fingers crossed for all of us in this nasty heat and dry!! fl.gif

Debbi, the scary thing is... I actually had someone tell me that they'd heard that things would not cool off here, at all, until October... hide.gif

As I'm typing this, I heard an unfamiliar sound outside and the chickens started raising a fuss, guess we've all forgotten what big fat raindrops hitting the ground sound like. Alas, the sun is still shining and the tiny little cloud those drops fell out of is already gone, and the little wet splats are already evaporated. What a tease!

Well Debbi, In true midwest extreme fashion, the weather is following suit. We have just been placed in a severe thunderstorm warning til midnight tonight. I'm praying we get some good rain, but none of the insane stuff.
