Was out in the coop yesterday looking at the birds. Noticed growth on the back of my favorite Blue pullets comb. Its like a point grew off the back and raps around to the front. Didnt notice it before as it is so close to the base of the comb and they are always moving. This really sucks!

Leghorns are great egg laying chickens. They are friendly to other Leghorns and can easily fly. The only problems is that they are bad in the pecking order and they can make a mess of the yard....

Hello all..... I know there is an awful lot of talk about combs and such lately and I have a question regarding the only marans roo I have right now. He is about 9.5 weeks old. Of three roos, he was my favorite and is the only one I have not rehomed. Of course all the talk of combs, type, etc has me looking more in depth at my birds and wonder if he is worth keep - even for me, just a backyard breeder, not interested in showing. I want to have birds of somewhat good quality- not junk, as some have put it
Please tell me what you think of him so far......... and I know that I shouldn't count my chicks before they hatch- but I anticipate if any chicks hatch from what I have cooking now, I will have more roos to choose from.
Here is Smokey- the shy boy....... he is one of the lowest on the pecking order and quite shy. He usually has his back to me and looking over his shoulder at me. I personally like his quiet nature. He just goes with the flow, at the back of the flock.....
Please excuse the extra comb on his neck !!! LOL!
Sprig??
I have noticed a slight flop in the back side of his comb.... does this get progressively worse??
Thank you all for helping me learn!
Yes, that looks like a sprig to me. DQ for all breeds, and they spread like wildfire if you use them for breeding. Sorry..."Live and learn from fools and from sages" ~ Aerosmith

Mornin
68 degrees here, and loving every second of it!"Maybe home is not really about geography...maybe home has more to do with the work we've all done as individuals to increasingly become people we can live with. All kinds of distant thunder though for a good tease. I am now dreading this winter coming. Food prices, human and animal are going to be through the roof! Gas is going back up again too. I think the whole world needs to stop, and everybody drop their prices on everything back to the 1960s price rate. Just think of all you could do and buy if you still had the same paycheck, but paid 60s prices!! Ahh, a nice pipe dream anyway!

Mornin' Vicki! Yes, cool here too at 73*, but the humidity is 97%! How can that be when the ground is so dry?? Only supposed to get to about 95 here today, but everytime they say that, it seems the temps here are over 100. I think now they are just saying that to make us feel cooler!

Quote:they might have been potato bugs. I'm not sure if you'll get much or not. I'd pick a plant and dig gently to see what's developed

They only came in for one day, and then were gone. They kind of look like a firefly, but they had lengthwise tain and dark brown stripes, and a reddish head. May just dig one plant and see what;s left. The poor garden is about shot right now, and I getting sick of watering..."Live and learn from fools and from sages" ~ Aerosmith
