yes whitmore is the tops but like you i went to what i could afford chicken scratch poultry and ranchers.out of the 25 i had 15 where roos.traded a few and sold couple.

have 1 rooster and 4 hens.they are free ranging at the moment but this weekend we are setting up the automatic waterers so they will be enclosed.

how long once confind with just the wellie rooster will the eggs be oure?

Sperm can remain viable in the hen for 4-5 weeks. If you are wanting a 100% pure for sure egg you should wait that long. Ask me how I know... I had a rooster in with my hens and had him removed for four weeks. Incubated all the eggs and voila... some were STILL his babies!  I think the normal recommended time is 4 weeks.

For those of you looking for work this may be of interest. 

A colleague of mine needs child care for a small baby (about 3 months old I think). They are near Bonita and need someone who has their own transportation, from 8.00am to 4.00pm  four days per week in house and who has some references.

Just throwing this out there...

In case none of my broody's eggs hatch, I'm planning on getting a few chicks for her. Who will have anything hatching around the 19th - 21st of this month? I'd love to get some more colored layers in my flock: EEs, Ameraucanas, Wellies, etc... My back up plan is getting some from Kahoots.

On a side note, does anybody know "Paige the Chicken Lady" in Ramona? She advertises on Craigslist. Right now she's advertising Black Stars; at least I'd know they'd all be pullets!

Bridget joined our family one year and 8 months ago.  We raised her from chickhood with her two flockmates.  She was always a problem chicken - everything seemed to happen to her, and it worried us to no end.  She went through a soft-shell phase and actually took a trip to the vet because of it.  I always worried that she'd become an internal layer.  She also went through a bout of avian pox which she recovered from nicely.  And she was the one, of course, to become broody last spring.  Above is a pic of her with one of her babies and another baby's butt.  She hatched 7 chicks and was a wonderful mother.  And when her boys matured, she was the one who got the bulk of their lustful attention.  Bridget was our friendliest girl, always the first to meet you at the door. Always the one who demanded treats.  She gave back though, as she was our best layer.  A coyote got her this morning.  I feel so guilty.  We moved into our new house 2 weeks ago and let the chickens free-range all day in their huge fenced yard.  I knew that we were playing with fire, with the chickens not totally secure, but they were SO happy.  We're going to build a large run for them soon, as the existing secure run is too small for the remaining chickens to be in all day.

Bridget, I'm so sorry, and I'll miss you so much.

Oh I am soo sorry for your loss.  I think we have all been there.  Last summer I lost thirty guineas.
