Phage, you are not kidding about this being a wildlife weekend. Today's topper for me was finding a dead OWL in my pool! I've had gophers, moles, mice and rats drowned in there before, but this was my first owl. It was actually quite sad.

I may have some various birds for sale at the meetup; I will have to wait and see how things sex out in the next few weeks! I'm going to be solo again that weekend, otherwise I'd volunteer to go stake out a site for us. I'm not sure how long Alex will last, so I'm going to have to plan my time carefully.

What kind of chicks are you selling?

I should be at the meet-up wee.gif and may bring chicks:

- cream legbar pairs,

- swedish flower hens

- ameraucanas

- olive eggers

- cuckoo marans

and probably project chicks including blue egg layers: cream legbar x wheaten ameraucanas, leghorn and brabanter.

Also have some pea fowl eggs cooking if anyone is interested, but they are not due to hatch until after the meet-up.

Holy COW I am meant to be cutting back on hatching hide.gif

Someone came to the lake and dropped off several Pekin ducks this weekend.  When I came along, this female was with Louie the gander and two male Pekins and she could hardly walk.  Her back was also all bloody.  I thought, at first, that Louie had hurt her, but I think he might have been protecting her because he seems to get upset when the males gang up on the females.  When I went to pick her up, he stretched out his neck at me, but let me do so.

I moved her to another place at the lake away from the males, but she got really upset and began looking for me in the road and parking lot.  Then, I moved her to another spot and the last I saw her, she was resting in the shade in the tree and seemed to be at peace, but she seemed to perk up when I talked to her.

Is there anyone here that can take her in?  I'm sure I can catch her again.  I don't think she's eaten much in the last day and doesn't seem interested in bathing.  I carried her around a lot and she didn't poop on me at all.  She can walk a little bit, but not much.  Otherwise, I will have to leave her there, she is too loud for me even to take home for a couple hours, plus the manager said that I absolutely can't bring her there at all not even for a second.

Here is a picture of her.  When I held her, her legs were really hot, but they seemed cooler the second time I carried her around.

Dumped female Pekin injured by being ganged up by the males.

I'd love to go to the meetup, with a few suggestions:

1.  No raffle.  I went to the meetup owning six chickens.  One raffle, six "you won!" fertilized Wellie eggs and a month later I had 23 and a second coop.

2.  No one brings chicks.  At all.  See#1 above.

3.  Now that I think about it, maybe it would be better if no one talked to each other.  At all.  See #1 and #2 above.

4.  Who am I kidding.  I will be at the meetup.  I will participate in a raffle, if there is one.  I will bring small baggies of flax seed, DE and kelp to donate to the raffle, if anyone might like those.  I will not bring a carrier, or my nephew, and hope it is enough to save me from my doom.

If a little bit is good, a whole lot is better.  That works with chickens, too, right?

San Diego (city) - 2 compost piles, 3 worm bins, 1 coop, 1 Australorp, 1 EE, 1 RLBW, 1 SLW, 2GLW.  Wait - now 2 coops, also 2 Production Reds, 2 more SLW, 1 Welsummer, 1 OE, 1 more EE, and 2 Wheaten Am's.  Wait - now also some RLBW in the incubator.  And 6 misc. in the brooder for Mom.  Trying for bees next,...
