Vitamin B helped hen's legs....now what? - Page 2

I do hope your RIR continues to improve!  Thinking back, it seems like my chicken didn't have much solid poop during her down time either.  Honestly I don't know what she is doing now.  We have so many out there, that I don't know who does what unless I see it happen.
I have noticed a lot of mine are having pretty watery poop now....some I see going...the rest I have to just watch my step when I'm out there.  I was going to post about this, but was reading that heat stress can cause that, and mine most definitely are having heat stress.  So am I.
Have you checked yours for worms?  I didn't check any of mine...and I have not given them worm meds at all, except for a couple who were sick.  And for those, I dripped injectible on them.  (someone said I could do that).  I'm trying to think of a way to give all of them a dose.  The only time I can catch them is after they go to roost at night, and that would be easier said than done, unless I had a way to mark them so I would know which ones have been treated.  Honestly I don't remember if I gave the one with the leg problem, any worm meds.  I don't think I did.
In addition to food, I gave mine oatmeal, watermelon, boiled eggs...all saturated with the Vitamin B.  And kept it in the water at all times.  My feeling would be that all you can do is keep food in front of her that she will eat, make sure she drinks, and maybe a dose of worm meds wouldn't hurt.  I believe the stress of the leg problem, plus the heat, might account for the diarrhea.
You know when children have diarrhea, the standard thing is the BRAT diet...bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast.  (I was a pediatric RN before my chicken days.)  I just thought of that.  I don't know why that wouldn't be good for a chicken.  Hmmmm.  I may have trouble ripping the bananas out of DH's hand...he eats them all the time.  But it would be easy enough to make some rice.  They will always eat toast.  Applesauce would be easy enough to feed.  I think I'll try it!

Chickfan, Thank you for all that information!!  I think I will try the BRAT diet, too!  And keep the vitamin B coming.  It has been unbearably hot here, too, so maybe her watery poop is due to that!

Happy to say our baby chick is still alive! Day 3! We mixed up 1/2 water (boiled) a little Karo syrup, some hard boiled egg yolk along with chick starter. Seems to be working! Does anyone know if oatmeal is supposed to be cooked?
