snakes in the chicken coop or chicken yard

Got this surprise yesterday morning when I opened my coop's nest box lid. A Texas rat snake! Sucker was at least 5 feet long when it finally uncoiled. I tumped our small coop over on its side and it eventually slithered away on its own. I'll leave a non-venomous rat snake alive to eat the rodents from the field behind the house. Rain all week has left much standing water behind the backyard so I guess it was looking for a dry place to hang out. There was a chicken egg untouched within reach of it so hopefully it hasn't learned to come get a meal. I'm afraid it may have been in there with the chickens all night when I locked them in. The chickens are fine but it gives me the willies! Gonna check more carefully from now on.
