My son is after some Bobwhites. I told him he had to talk to Game and Wildlife due to where we live and they said there was no issue with him having less than 25 as long as it was for private use- no hunting, selling, or releasing. My son wants to observe their behaviors and compare them to other breeds, and he's ready for them. I'm trying to talk him into waiting til closer to time for us to move on our land if all goes through. But in the mean time I'm researching to make sure we do this right!

We are in Delaware and need a permit. It is free for 25 or less birds with no selling.
It's $11.50 for more than 25 and you can breed and sell
We only have 13 but went ahead and paid for the permit.
They turned 4 weeks Friday.
When can we turn off the heat lamp?
How do you keep them from flying away?
We have had Coturnix for a year now and was told Bob's were not much differentso took the plunge but dang they are fast.
Everytime I open the brooder at least one gets out and flys around the house.
I am terrified that when we put them in a pen outside they will fly away

Lower the temp 5 degrees a week (by using a lower watt bulb or by moving the lamp further from the birds), until you reach the temp of the surroundings. Then you can remove the lamp. To keep them from flying away, I'd go for a large enclosure (to allow them to run so far away when you approach, that they don't panic - this might be an actual aviary, not sure about the flight distance of bobwhites) and/or an enclosure with relatively small doors - just big enough to get feeders and such through.

Ok, so this is where to post about bobwhites. I love them too! I just raised a batch of 100 northerns for the first time in ten years and kept 7 of them. I have a batch of Georgia Giants in the incubator, 120 out of 132 eggs had embryos at 10 days!

One of my northern bobwhite chicks has orange feathers and I was wondering if anyone else has seen this color in bobwhite.

My bobwhite hens quails are about 5-7 weeks old. And no eggs yet. I leave the light on at night around 7pm and turn them iff around 6am. Is that bad?
