Sumatra Thread!

Are there any hatcheries that offer blue sumatras? I am wanting a few for free ranging, and to familiarize myself with the breed. It seems no one in Oklahoma raises them, so going to have to go with some hatchery birds until I find whether I like them or not. I am aware hatchery stock is often very inferior, but gotta start somewhere. Would prefer bantam but not picky.

Haha.. Thanks. He looks shorter and stubbier than he is due to the grass around his feet, although he is still shorter legged than he should be (and he's a bit on the chubby side). I have a young blue cockerel that is looking really nice that I think I will probably use on the hens related to him, and then use him over some of the blues that need more spurs/feathering. The hens that came with him on that trio are pretty decent and really stand tall when on alert.

I have to say that I prefer longer feathered birds over the ones that are more European and gamey, but not at the expense of being short and stubby, either. I like the looks of gallo's birds, for example, but I like them as what they are, crosses.

But then, I'm a sucker for long feathered birds. If I thought I could get a 3-4 foot tail on a black sumatra while retaining it's other proper characteristics (black face, multiple spurs, feather iridescence) you can bet I'd try it for my own satisfaction

I'm going to pen them together soon, Poe is starting to act like a rooster and I want to start hatching as soon as I have fertile eggs. I'm really excited.

Think Ideal has black bantams. Cant sy I have ever seen blue bantams or bantam period offered by any of the others. Many breeders ship chicks too by the way. And I think Steve Whitaker in OK has sumatra. I know he was working on whites for a white. He's VP of the UPA think his website is cherokeetrails, or something similar, can get it for you if that's not it.

LOL, I like a rooster on the chunky side

Of course, I also like a rooster that abides by the standard, and I doubt that Sumatras are supposed to be too chunky. But chunky individuals look more gamey to me, and being a gamefowl enthusiast, I enjoy that look.

At the same time, though, I'm also a sucker for an occasional longtail. My favorite longtails are Sumatras and Minohikis. If you haven't seen Minohikis before, check out my Oriental Gamefowl Thread. They are gorgeous! They have long, flowing tails but still tend to look gamey and alert. Their close cousin, the Satsumadori, also has a longer tail, but nothing quite like what you might expect from a Longtail breed. Both Satsumadoris and Minohikis are game and are prized in Japan for cockfights.

does anyone have any Platinums? oh yea please have them in bantam size i dont do anything bigger. please pm me with the price of a dozen plus shipping thank you. wont be buying till next year though.

got about -12 year to go on perfecting my duns, then I'll breed them to my blues and have some platinum bantams for you, but it'll take a few years. They'll be a rare find , especially in bantam, there may be 1-2 out there with them. If you find them, let me know too. I'd like to find some good quality dun and whites in bantam as well.

Will have plenty of bantam phoenix for you next spring in many colors, noticed you had a similar post over there too.
