They're about 4 1/2 weeks old, and there's some Golden Lakenvelders in there, too - just to make identifying them interesting. Anyone have or know whereof I might see some photos of Auburn Sumatras?

I wonder if they are anything like the 'auburn javas' where it was a weird red colored cull/throwback?

I have never heard of it before, either...in fact, it's not listed in their catalog, however, the packing slip shows it as being offered this year, and in fact, shows there were 7 included in my order. I saw somewhere, on some site or another, (feathersite?) a mention of the color, but can't find any photos. It sure sounds like a pretty bird - if I'm imagining the "auburn" correctly. I know there's several in my chicks that could fit the bill - hard to tell, as there's also supposed to be 4 Golden Lakenvelders in there, too.

Is there a Sumatra breed association or large breeder that might know?

Not much info at all on their website...for those here that are members...how is the club?  Worth it?

I was wondering the same thing! I would like to be a part of the "bigger picture" in the sumatra breed. But there's not that much to go by just by visiting their site.
Also, is there any books on the breeds history? I'd like to know as much info on this breed as possible!

Too bad I don't know anyone in Kentucky who could ship me the birds!

I've got Duns though, I just need to work on increasing my numbers and working on type now... it's gonna be a long road.

I've considered joining the ASA, I just haven't yet due to lack of knowledge about the group. I'd love to hear from a member.

I've been working with them about 12 years now, and it's still new to me. Has to just be something they made, or a type o on the papers, one or the other. They can be made by a breeder and called whatever they want if it's a new color to the hobby. I'm currently breeding them into quite a few different colors, but from what I'd be thinking of as auburn would be a burnt red, which is pretty much a ginger red in the chciken world, just has  a black tail. I'm currently in project phase on those too. Curious to see what they finish out looking like!!

I've shot an email to Sand Hills Preservation, asking for photos on their Auburns; he's not real prompt on responding to emails, but I'll pass on whatever info and/or photos he sends me. I think I've got the Golden Lakenveldes identified, so if I can count 7 or close-about that are any shade of red & look similar to each other, I'll take some photos & let everyone here help decide. The tails should help set them apart, but I don't know at what age to expect it. They're just 4 1/2 weeks old now...
