I've ordered from Ideal & McMurray. I would definitely recommend Ideal all the way- I've never had any DOAs or sick birds and their customer service is awesome. Can't say enough good things about them.

I have gotten DOAs from McMurray however (they shipped over the weekend...!) so I won't be ordering from them again.

Good luck with your chicks! smile

I ordered 5, 1 day old chicks from My Pet Chicken. All arrived next day (Express mail) from Connecticut, I am in Washington State so was happy about that. We lost one at about 3 days, but I don't think it had anything to do with MPC. The other 4 are growing like weeds and I am really pleased. (2 RIR, 1 Delaware, 1 Gold laced Wyandotte).

We also ordered 2 Mallard ducklings from McMurray. One was DOA on arrival and the other one seems OK, but not growing as fast as I thought she would. But it's my first time w/ducklings. She seems healthy and happy. Their customer service was good and rec'd a prompt refund for the DOA....poor thing.

I have 2 more Mallard ducklings on the way from Metzer's. Their customer service when I ordered was excellent. I was still pretty upset from receiving my DOA and the rep was great, very reassuring and empathetic. We'll see how the ducklings arrive from them next week. They are in northern CA, much closer to me than the other hatcheries.

(1 highly amusing husband, 2 fantastic boys, 1 lovable old dog, 2 snakes, 2 gecko's, 4 fish, 2 RIR's, 1 Gold-Laced Wyandotte, 1 persnickity but loveable Delaware, 3 Mallards and 1 Rouen...all of indeterminate sex at the moment!)

We've used McMurray and have had no problems.  All 36 of mine arrived happy, healthy, and active as chicks and are still the same way 8+ weeks later.  Yes, they ship on weekends, because the PO they ship from says they have to.  Didn't make a difference with mine.

Check the "chicken breeders and hatcheries" threads.

7.5 acres in the western Catskill foothills of garden, blueberries, 4 cats plus 20 Black Stars, 12 RIR, 7 EE's, 4 Brown leghorns, 4 BR, a SS and 6 guinea keats,  including one very happy EE rooster. In 33 yrs of keepin' chickens I shoulda learned somethin', but unfortunately I'm addicted to the MCMurray catalog.

A few of us in town got together and ordered 47 chicks from Welp.  They are due to arrive Friday the 17th, so I can't say much yet.  Had anyone else ordered from Welp before?

We just got some from McMurry on Aug. 27,  one was dead when we picked up at PO. But all the rest seem healthy and active. 1 out 26 doesnt seem like a real big deal i suppose. would order from them again.

Hey hunny, what do you think about getting a few chickens?   Hey, how did we end up with 3 coops and 30 chickens?
