Cooking sparrows

are you kidding me?

with all the respect on your feelings about birds, i want to state that:

I raise chickens because i love them and someday i will KILL THEM and EAT THEM because i will have too many, and those pests, sparrows, give me and my chickens a hard time

It even goes beyond that, see i love vegetables, and therefor i have a vegetable garden, and those pests, sparrows, EAT THEM

I also get angry sometimes, especially when someone messes with my hard work, i would eat anything that messed with my garden and chickens, if i would not risk my health, even you

From this topic that i opened here, i learned alot, i heard many great opinions, ideas and i even learned sparrow recipes. But feelings? give me a break please, i love birds too, i propably even love sparrows, but not the ones that attack my yard.

By the way, their native here, but no law protects them, because they are so many, the only law that i would have a problem with is the one that does not allow you to hunt with traps, but see i will not hunt with traps, i will set them up in my yard, like i would do a rat trap.

For your information, i havent killed any sparrow yet, i havent build the trap, but i will, and then i will open another topic in pests, to show the world how i got rid of them, how they tasted, if my chickens liked them boiled or fried and if my sisters cats ate their bones or just their meat. If you think i am cruel about my thoughts on sparrows, you are right! I am just as cruel as anyone that knows what i am talking about.

Also CaryLynn you said
"I would seriously wonder about someone who has such blood lust over something so minor that can be fixed with some work and sweat and a bit of money."

But you forgot to mention that it needs time too, and my schedule is completely full at the moment, i am at work now, thats why i have time to post here. I dont get any days off for 7 months, then i get some months off work to handle my hobbies. Like building a proper coop for my chickens to keep the sparrows off the feed, and build a trap for the sparrows to keep them off my vegetable garden.

Also Pet Duck Boy, how can you sparrow proof an area 100x100 sq feet? I havent figure that out yet.

Hi Foodkillah, are you still battling those pesky sparrows? In the USA, sparrows are not quite the problem that they seem to be for you. To put things in a proper prespective, I guess we could compare them to rats swarming over our coop and run areas. No one likes rats stealing their chickens feed and we trap them, poison them and have dogs and cats to kill them or keep them chased away. Nobody says AWWW, poor little rats, they just want something to eat. Nope, we all chime in to talk about how much we hate rats and all the various ways to kill them. So maybe in your country, the sparrows are a pest equal to the rats in our country. We don't like it when our gardens are raided and our food is eaten and spoiled by rats, squirrels and various other varmits. Nobody here wants to eat the nasty rats or feed them to their chickens, but I think it would be a fair comparison between our rats and your sparrows. At least your sparrows are a lot cleaner animal than rats.

Come on ya'll, lighten up on Foodkillah. He came here to vent his frustrations on a pest that is destroying what he is trying to have. How many of us have had to make do with what we had until we could get the money or time to build something better? I know I have been there before and probably will again. Some of us eat the opposums and raccoons that attack our flocks, so what is the difference between that and him eating the sparrows? Or feeding them to his chickens? He has stated several times that he will build a brick chicken coop when his work schedule lets up and he has more time. I for one would love to see pictures of his brick coop when he finishes. Remember folks, we have members here from around the world and their pest might not be your pest, but it is still a pest.

How many grams of meat per sparrow? How much time to remove said meat from each? If a method of quickly disposing of 10,000 and rapidly processing could be achieved, it might be worthwhile (~10gm. breast meat per sparrow). So, approx. 200lb. of `boutique', bottled, `Spwab', sold in the States (remember, folks, don't toss the opossums and raccoons - feed them to the pressure cooker Ball jarred with Wyler's beef bullion and cheap Merlot) would fetch some still edible (but not tasty) greenbacks. However, even if the below method was effective, and it took ~3min. to pick up and process each sparrow, it would take 250 folks working ~2hr.s to complete the task (then there is seasoning and the saute before canning it).

I've heard it said that soaking kernels of corn in cheap corn liquor, then spread on the floor of a building suffering from pigeon infestation will, when consumed by those rafter rats, render them disoriented and floor bound where they can be dispatched at one's leisure. I wonder how many kilos of corn and booze would be required to render 10,000 sparrows flightless.

Netting the chook's favorite areas might be less of a hassle, but I'd not stop considering how to tap these `sardines of the sky'.

joebryant wrote: While you're killing the English house sparrow (EHS) (it's actually a weaver finch), take out the European starlings (ES) too (now there's a meal). These two non-native birds kill hundreds of thousands of our native hole-nesting birds, e.g., bluebirds, every year. Near the end of the 19th century, some idiotic multi-millionaire who was a Shakespearean enthusiast paid for all the European birds mentioned in Shakespear plays to be brought to the U.S. and released in New York City's Central Park. Only the super-aggressive EHS and ES survived. Within 25 years they had moved west all the way to California, taking almost all of the natural woodpecker holes that our many kinds of hole-nesting birds needed. That's why now we have to put up special housing for them, but even what we put up the EHS and ES (S&S) take if they can get in. Kill 'em ALL!

They are such stuff as soups are made of... (to paraphrase the bard).

Actually, not all of us. I find it much easier to pred/pest-proof once and well than to try to keep up with killing preds, a never ending exercise. I would rather not kill if I don't have to and while it takes more effort up front to do it my way, overall it costs much, much less time and effort. This coming from someone who has to work a bazillion hours.

Hi,
I should let you know that sparrows are assumed a very healthy food in some parts of Afghanistan. it is cooked in traditional ways. they make them small meatballs and cook delicious soup
i myself hunt them with my airgun and fry them every month. they have never made me sick or feel bad.
So feel free to eat them.
